12 Jan 1981TL;DR: In this article, a reversible pitch fan propulsion unit for aircraft has a main duct 3 containing a pitch fan rearward of which is provided a flow splitter 13 dividing the main duct into radially outer and inner branch ducts 3A, 3B.
Abstract: Ducted fan propulsion unit for aircraft has a main duct 3 containing a reversible pitch fan 1 rearward of which is provided a flow splitter 13 dividing the main duct into radially outer and inner branch ducts 3A, 3B. A radial passage 15 in the splitter connects the branch ducts and divides the splitter into front and rear parts 13A, 13B. The part of the inner branch duct forward of the radial passage contains an array of stator vanes 12B and has outer and inner wall surfaces 3B1,3B2 both of progressively reducing diameter to urge the flow through that branch duct toward the inlet of a compressor 8 of yet smaller diameter. Stator vanes 12A in the outer branch duct are arranged forward of the radial passage. The arrangement favors a relatively low axial length of the powerplant.

18 Jan 1978TL;DR: In this article, a potted head combustion chamber is provided with an annular gap between the downstream end of the pot and the combustion chamber itself, and air is supplied radially inwardly through this gap to remove any fuel which adheres to the walls of the Pot, and prevents it from reaching the walls.
Abstract: A potted head combustion chamber is provided with an annular gap between the downstream end of the pot and the combustion chamber itself. Air is supplied radially inwardly through this gap to remove any fuel which adheres to the walls of the pot, and prevents it from reaching the walls of the combustion chamber. Fuel on the combustion chamber walls can cause localized burning of the fuel with a consequent increase in temperature of that part of the combustion chamber wall.

TL;DR: In this paper, detailed experimental measurements of the flow in a cascade of turbine rotor blades with a nonplanar end wall are reported, where the cascade geometry was chosen to model as closely as possible that of a H.P. gas turbine rotor blade.
Abstract: Detailed experimental measurements of the flow in a cascade of turbine rotor blades with a nonplanar end wall are reported. The cascade geometry was chosen to model as closely as possible that of a H.P. gas turbine rotor blade. The blade section is designed for supersonic flow with an exit Mach number of 1.15 and the experiments covered a range of exit Mach numbers from 0.7-1.2. Significant three-dimensional effects were observed and the origin of these is discussed. The measurements are compared with data for the same blade section in a two-dimensional cascade and also with the predictions of two different fully three-dimensional inviscid flow calculation methods. It is found that both these calculations predict the major threedimensional effects on the flow correctly.

30 Oct 1973TL;DR: In this paper, a method of testing an object in which a beam of laser radiation is split into two portions, the object is illuminated with a first beam portion and is caused to vibrate, one of said beam portions is phase modulated in a predetermined phase relationship with the object vibration and the radiation scattered from the blade is causing to fall upon a photographic emulsion together with the second reference beam portion to form a hologram.
Abstract: A method of testing an object in which a beam of laser radiation is split into two portions, the object is illuminated with a first beam portion and is caused to vibrate, one of said beam portions is phase modulated in predetermined phase relationship with the object vibration and the radiation scattered from the blade is caused to fall upon a photographic emulsion together with the second reference beam portion to form a hologram. The invention also comprises apparatus for carrying out this method.

TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown that very often, and certainly much more frequently than is currently recognised, the levels of low frequency noise are enough to interfere with people to a degree sufficient to cause significant misery, distress and economic penalty.
Abstract: Low frequency sound is omnipresent and although our ears do not readily detect it, the noise spectrum measured in even the quietest location is dominated by energy at the low end of the spectrum (Fig. I). However, very often, and certainly much more frequently than is currently recognised, the levels of low frequency noise are enough to interfere with people to a degree sufficient to cause significant misery, distress and economic penalty.
