TL;DR: In this article, a method of removing refractory material from a component comprises contacting the material with a chemically active agent whereby to convert the material to a more easily removable substance.
Abstract: A method of removing refractory material from a component comprises contacting the refractory material with a chemically active agent whereby to convert the refractory material to a more easily removable substance, and removing the more easily removable substance. The method enables alumina cores defining cooling passages in cast blades for use in gas turbine engines to be removed at practically useful rates.

TL;DR: In this article, a variable pitch fan is counter balanced by the centrifugal force on a cam follower member, which is reacted by a cam member connected to the blade to provide a turning moment on the blade opposite to the turning moment.
Abstract: The centrifugal turning moments on a variable pitch fan blade are counter balanced by the centrifugal force on a cam follower member which is reacted by a cam member connected to the blade to provide a turning moment on the blade opposite to the centrifugal turning moment. The cam member is a cylinder surrounding the blade root and having at least one cam track. A reaction member in the form of a second cylinder concentric with the cam member and having oppositely inclined corresponding cam tracks is connected to structure stationary relative to the blade. The cam follower member is a roller engaging the cam tracks on both the cam member and the reaction member.

TL;DR: In this article, a cooling air supply arrangement for a gas turbine engine comprises a rotor, a source of cooling air at a high supply pressure, a first passage adapted to transmit a first flow of said cooling air to a first area of the rotor and to reduce its pressure to a second pressure lower than the first pressure.
Abstract: A cooling air supply arrangement for a gas turbine engine comprises a rotor, a source of cooling air at a high supply pressure, a first passage adapted to transmit a first flow of said cooling air to a first area of the rotor and to reduce its pressure to a first pressure lower than said high supply pressure, and a second passage adapted to transmit a second flow of said cooling air to a second area of the rotor and to reduce its pressure to a second pressure lower than the first pressure. A seal is provided to resist flow of cooling air from said first to said second area, and in order to reduce the leakage through the seal it incorporates part of the second passage including nozzles oriented to direct at least part of said second flow against the leakage flow. In this way the leakage is reduced and simultaneously the pressure of the second flow is reduced.

TL;DR: A fluid flow machine has a plurality of compressor blades, each blade has aerofoil and root portions together with a platform portion which is made of a material of a different nature to that of the blade, and which is joined to it.
Abstract: A fluid flow machine has a plurality of compressor blades, each blade has aerofoil and root portions together with a platform portion which is made of a material of a different nature to that of the blade, and which is joined to it. In one embodiment the blade is titanium and the platform portion is a foamed polyurethane resin.

TL;DR: In this paper, a self priming gear pump with a vent pipe 26 for releasing entrapped gases that would otherwise collect at the outlet side of the pump 14 terminates within the pump housing 21 at a zone which is out of the path of the oil centrifuged by the gears 25 and in the region lying near the point of intersection of the gear 25.
Abstract: A self priming gear pump 14 for pumping liquids containing gases is provided with a vent pipe 26 for releasing entrapped gases that would otherwise collect at the outlet side of the pump 14. The vent pipe 26 terminates within the pump housing 21 at a zone which is out of the path of the oil centrifuged by the gears 25 and in the region lying near the point of intersection of the gears 25. An additional inlet pipe 27 which directs liquid across the main inlet into the gap between the periphery of one of the gears 25 and the housing 21 may be provided to improve liquid sealing.
