01 Nov 2012TL;DR: A close loop expert system guided heating control system has been developed for Annealing Furnaces of Line # 1 at Bokaro Steel Plant and has rendered significant improvement in plants performance in terms of productivity, quality and energy savings.
Abstract: Steel coils in cold rolling mill of an integrated steel plant are annealed to remove the mechanical distortions ensued by hot and cold rolling. It is an extremely crucial process upon which the final quality of product depends. In annealing process coils are heated following a pre-defined thermal regime and then cooled slowly. Thermal regime or heating cycle basically depends on coil dimensions and steel grade. However in practical there are no well established co-relations are available, which can determine the thermal regime to be followed for a given set of coil parameters. Such indeterminate applications are the fittest areas, where the theoretical concepts of Artificial Intelligence or expert system in particular can be applied in real time process control. A close loop expert system guided heating control system has been developed for Annealing Furnaces of Line # 1 at Bokaro Steel Plant. The integrated automation is based on the concepts of hierarchical control, wherein a Level-II rule based expert system selects most appropriate thermal regime for a given set of steel coils and Level-I PAC controls and supervises the furnace heating operation as per the guidelines of expert system. The application has rendered significant improvement in plants performance in terms of productivity, quality and energy savings.

TL;DR: In this paper, four numbers of laboratory heats containing 0.19% P, 23-60ppm B and varying amounts of other elements, viz. Cr, Cu, Ni, B and Nb were made through ingot casting route.
Abstract: Four numbers of laboratory heats containing 0.19 % P, 23–60 ppm B and varying amounts of other elements, viz. Cr, Cu, Ni, B and Nb were made through ingot casting route. Effects of these elements on mechanical properties were studied after hot rolling the ingots in an experimental rolling mill. Nb increased yield strength and ultimate tensile strength considerably though its beneficial effect on toughness was not realized in the presence of boron. While the beneficial effect of B in the range of 23–60 ppm was not realized, the steel without B exhibited highest toughness value. In this particular steel, the volume fraction of {100}〈001〉 texture component was lowest and percentage of HAGBs was highest, both of which contributed to the increase in toughness value. Further, this steel also exhibited the distribution of highest numbers of fine grains suitable for structural applications.

TL;DR: In this article, a failed splice plate, cracked in the heel region of the plate has been studied in detail to find out genesis of such failure, the failed plate material near the crack and away from the crack indicated presence of white hard martensite layer near the cracks.
Abstract: Steel splice plates are used in power transmission line towers. During service, some of these plates may fail due the loading stress as well as stress generated due to inclement weather condition. One such failed splice plate, cracked in the heel region of the plate has been studied in detail to find out genesis of such failure. Metallographic study of the failed plate material near the crack and away from the crack indicated presence of white hard martensite layer near the crack. Evaluation of mechanical properties of the plate material carried out at heel and edge regions had also supported the above findings. There was enhancement of hardness, yield strength, tensile strength of the plate near heel which had indicated localized hardening of the plate in this region due to presence of martensite. A substantial deterioration of the Charpy impact toughness of the material at the heel region could also be observed particularly at subzero testing temperatures due to the same reason. The material inadequacies and operational stresses must have caused the initiation and propagation of the cracks in the heel region of the plate leading to its premature failure.

TL;DR: In this paper, a professional with experience in marketing of industrial products identifies opportunity in marketing select industrial products in yet to be exploited market of North India and incorporated Times Marketing Private Limited.
Abstract: A professional with experience in marketing of industrial products identifies opportunity in marketing select industrial products in yet to be exploited market of North India. He incorporated Times Marketing Private Limited. Since inception, the company followed certain core values in the journey of its growth. The essence of these values was total professional integrity in operations. However, the company faced certain challenges in terms of resource constraints in the beginning, conflict of competencies in growth phase and succession issue in maturity phase. The case examines nature of the opportunity, in which the entrepreneur assembles and displays his resources to meet the opportunity and his own values and behaviour. The case describes extensive thought process of a typical professional and his dilemma in his professional life in corporate and entrepreneurial venture. The resolution of such dilemma has been addressed with critical analysis of environment, values and resources to strive for congruenc...

TL;DR: In this paper, the effect of P on corrosion behavior of low alloy steels exposed for one month cyclic wet/dry salt spray was investigated and compared with low carbon steel.
Abstract: The effect of P on corrosion behaviour of low alloy steels exposed for one month cyclic wet/dry salt spray was investigated and compared with low carbon steel. Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) results revealed that the rust resistance (R rust ) increased with the number of salt spray test cycles. The higher phosphorus content steel (G12) exhibited higher rust resistance (R rust ) than that of low phosphorus content steels (SCR & G11), while similar corrosion rate was noticed from the Tafel extrapolation study in 3.5% NaCl solution for all the test samples. All steels revealed ferrite pearlite microstructure. The larger ferrite grain of G12 steel containing highest phosphorus content (0.42 wt. % P) is attributed to the effect of phosphorus.
