TL;DR: The conclusion is that U. guianensis has been less studied than U. tomentosa under all aspects evaluated and no report was found on either sustainable management or conservation or domestication strategies or yet large scale production that can continuously attend the global demand of the pharmaceutic industry.
Abstract: The Uncaria tomentosa and Uncaria guianensis species, which are endemic plants in the Amazonian region, are highlighted as medicinal plants mainly because of their anti-inflammatory activity. The vegetal drug and various types of extracts have been commercialized by pharmaceutical industries and distributed in several countries, thus configuring the economic potential of both species. The objective of the present research was to collect agronomical data published in PubMed, SciELO, and Scopus databases and analyze the main subjects that were either investigated or not investigated to enable the production chain of these species. The conclusion is that U. guianensis has been less studied than U. tomentosa under all aspects evaluated. Both species have been exploited in an extractivistic way. However, no report was found on either sustainable management or conservation or domestication strategies or yet large scale production that can continuously attend the global demand of the pharmaceutic industry. Furthermore, the amount currently produced is insufficient to supply the program of the Ministry of Health, which intends to provide herbal drugs from Uncaria to all Brazilian cities.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigate the relationship between reducing costs and environmental investments, and find out if there are economic benefits behind the financial environmental conservation, control, recycling and recovery activities, and examine whether the reduction in costs is a relevant factor in the decision of environmental investments.
Abstract: The "Sustainable Development" has been discussed in various areas of scientific knowledge. His analysis, in accounting, is unlinking of "romanticism" and comes to the entrepreneur mind. That is, the environment is considered in the decision processes of. Normally, when sustainable development is discussed, analyzed the activities, at first, are the environmental preservation, control, recycling and recovery activities. That, it seems, has a sustainable production process only incur more expenses, released from a competitive strategy, remaining well, the environment, in the sphere "romantic." If you really were so, investing in the environment only would a better image and not generate any economic and financial benefit, then why many companies are remodeling their production processes to promote sustainable development? To discuss this issue and considering the ways to obtain economic benefit is cost savings or increased revenues, this work aims to investigate the relationship between reducing costs and environmental investments. This means that the article tries to find out if there are economic benefits behind the financial environmental conservation, control, recycling and recovery activities. Thus, the problem is to examine whether the reduction in costs is a relevant factor in the decision of environmental investments

TL;DR: The wide-ranging activity of maytenin and 22-β-hydroxymaytenin in head and neck cancer cells indicates that these molecules should be further explored in plant biochemistry and biotechnology for therapeutic applications.
Abstract: Natural triterpenes exhibit a wide range of biological activities. Since this group of secondary metabolites is structurally diverse, effects may vary due to distinct biochemical interactions within biological systems. In this work, we investigated the anticancer-related activities of the quinone-methide triterpene maytenin and its derivative compound 22-β-hydroxymaytenin, obtained from Maytenus ilicifolia roots cultivated in vitro. Their antiproliferative and pro-apoptotic activities were evaluated in monolayer and three-dimensional cultures of immortalized cell lines. Additionally, we investigated the toxicity of maytenin in SCID mice harboring tumors derived from a squamous cell carcinoma cell line. Both isolated molecules presented pronounced pro-apoptotic activities in four cell lines derived from head and neck squamous cell carcinomas, including a metastasis-derived cell line. The molecules also induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) and down-regulated microRNA-27a and microRNA-20a/miR-17-5p, corroborating with the literature data for triterpenoids. Intraperitoneal administration of maytenin to tumor-bearing mice did not lead to pronounced histopathological changes in kidney tissue, suggesting low nephrotoxicity. The wide-ranging activity of maytenin and 22-β-hydroxymaytenin in head and neck cancer cells indicates that these molecules should be further explored in plant biochemistry and biotechnology for therapeutic applications.

TL;DR: Phytochemical analyses of ethanol extract from Tabernaemontana catharinensis stem bark showed the presence of alkaloids and terpenoids, which may be responsible for the observed pharmacological activities described in this work.
Abstract: In this work we describe the analgesic, anti-inflammatory and toxic activities as well as the phytochemical profile of the ethanol extract from Tabernaemontana catharinensis A. DC. (Apocynaceae) stem bark. Analgesic evaluation was carried out against chemical and thermal stimuli. Anti-inflammatory activity was investigated on carrageenan-induced edema in rats and toxicological studies (LD50) were conducted in mice. Phytochemical analyses were performed by standardized methodology. In an analgesic assay, acetic acid-induced writhings were significantly inhibited by extract doses of 37.5 mg/kg (40.97%), 75 mg/kg (77.70%) and 150 mg/kg (88.98%). A central analgesia was also observed using T. catharinensis extract at all doses tested, particularly noticed at 60 and 90 min following administration. The extract significantly reduced edema development by 30.35% (37.5 mg/kg), 34.46% (75 mg/kg), and 56.42% (150 mg/kg) when assessed 180 min following carrageenan intraplantar injection, demonstrating an effective an...
