TL;DR: This investigation contradicts the speculation that the association between this cancer and estrogen use can be explained by swifter diagnosis for estrogen users, misclassification of estrogen-related hyperplasia or treatment of early symptoms of the tumor with estrogen.
Abstract: Our case-control study of the relation between estrogen use and endometrial cancer involved 451 cases and 888 controls. The overall risk of endometrial carcinoma was sixfold for estrogen users as compared with nonusers; long-term users (greater than five years) had a 15-fold risk. Excess risk was present for both diethylstilberstrol and conjugated estrogens. The risk associated with cyclic use was as great as that for continuous use. Increased risk was associated with estrogen use for all histologic grades of the tumor. The risk of advanced-stage carcinoma was fourfold for estrogen users, but rhe confidence interval was wide, and this question requires further study. Finally, this investigation contradicts the speculation that the association between this cancer and estrogen use can be explained by swifter diagnosis for estrogen users, misclassification of estrogen-related hyperplasia or treatment of early symptoms of the tumor with estrogen.

TL;DR: Natural occurrence of inierfer on-mediated 2′–5′ adenine oligonucleotide inhibitors in interferon-treated, EMC virus-infected mouse L cells is reported, consistent with the idea that they play a part in the inhibition of virus growth.
Abstract: Until now the inierfer on-mediated 2′–5′ adenine oligonucleotide inhibitors (2–5A) of cell-free protein synthesis have not been detected in intact cells. Here we report their natural occurrence in interferon-treated, EMC virus-infected mouse L cells in amounts consistent with the idea that they play a part in the inhibition of virus growth.

Abstract: A field trial was carried out in the eastern part of the State of Minas Gerais (Brazil) of a vaccine containing killed promastigotes of five stocks of Leishmania. Tests with Montenegro antigen showed that a high proportion of the vaccinated persons became positive within three months, but circulating antibodies were not detected. A proportion of those vaccinated continued to give positive Montenegro reactions for up to three years. Lymphocyte sensitivity tests carried out, on a small sample, three years after vaccination were positive and gave no evidence of immunological depression. No cases of cutaneous or mucocutaneous leishmaniasis occurred in the trial area during the three years of observations.

TL;DR: In the complex and confusing epidemiological situation in the Rio Doce Valley it seems unwise to apply traditional specific names to Leishmania of the area, and no species previously incriminated as vectors of mexicana and braziliensis infections in Brazil is found.
Abstract: Dermal leishmaniasis is prevalent in the predominantly settled agricultural areas in the Rio Doce Valley in the eastern part of the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The disease has been recorded almost equally in both sexes. Cases have been confirmed in all age groups but youths aged ten to 14 years form the population segment at greatest risk to infection. Cases of single cutaneous lesions, multiple cutaneous lesions and muco-cutaneous lesions have been recorded in the area. Isolates of parasites include representatives of the Leishmania mexicana and L. braziliensis complexes and at least one parasite that does not fit into either category. Infections have not been detected in small mammals (mainly rodents) but about 3% of dogs are infected. The phlebotomine fauna includes no species (or close relatives of species) previously incriminated as vectors of mexicana and braziliensis infections in Brazil. In the complex and confusing epidemiological situation in the Rio Doce Valley it seems unwise to apply traditional specific names to Leishmania of the area.

TL;DR: Since the isoenzyme patterns of a stock isolated from a patient with acute disease were similar to those of a silvatic reservoir, its recent introduction into the domiciliary cycle is postulated.
Abstract: 1. The isoenzyme patterns of four soluble enzymes in seven stocks of T. cruzi were determined by electrophoresis. According to their patterns they could be classified into four sets. 2. The isoenzyme patterns of two stocks were influenced by the number of subcultures. 3. Five stocks from man are distinct from those derived from a silvatic reservoir. 4. Since the isoenzyme patterns of a stock isolated from a patient with acute disease were similar to those of a silvatic reservoir, its recent introduction into the domiciliary cycle is postulated.

TL;DR: The cholinergic and adrenergic innervation of human minor sublingual buccal and labial salivary glands has been studied with histochemical techniques for localizing acetylcholinesterase and catecholamines to suggest that the autonomic nervous mechanism which regulates salivARY secretion is more elaborate in the major than in the minor salivaries.
Abstract: The cholinergic and adrenergic innervation of human minor sublingual buccal and labial salivary glands has been studied with histochemical techniques for localizing acetylcholinesterase and catecholamines. A rich cholinergic innervation was observed around the acini, blood vessels and some ducts of the three glands.

TL;DR: In this article, it was shown that the coupling between the tunneling motion of one proton and the tunnel motion of another to the Ising model in a transverse field Hamiltonian can lead to large isotope shifts in deuteration even for small values of tunneling intergal.
Abstract: The addition of a ${B}_{\mathrm{ij}}{S}_{i}^{x}{S}_{j}^{x}$-type coupling between the tunneling motion of one proton and the tunneling motion of another to the Ising model in a transverse-field Hamiltonian, or the addition of the probably larger ${S}_{i}^{x}{F}_{i}^{x}{Q}_{i}$-type pseudospin phonon coupling (describing the modulation of the distance between the two equilibrium sites in an O-H \ifmmode\cdot\else\textperiodcentered\fi{} \ifmmode\cdot\else\textperiodcentered\fi{} \ifmmode\cdot\else\textperiodcentered\fi{} O bond by nonpolar phonons), results in a temperature-dependent renormalization of the proton tunneling integral. This is important close to ${T}_{C}$, where the soft-mode frequency vanishes, ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{\mathrm{crit}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0$. This may lead to large isotope shifts in ${T}_{C}$ on deuteration even for small values of the tunneling intergal and may explain some phenomena recently observed in PbHP${\mathrm{O}}_{4}$ and squaric acid as well as the dependence of the effective proton-lattice interaction constant on hydrostatic pressure in K${\mathrm{H}}_{2}$P${\mathrm{O}}_{4}$-type systems. This last effect may be also due to the presence of a ${S}_{i}^{x}{D}_{i}^{x}{{Q}_{i}}^{2}$ term in addition to the Kobayashi ${S}_{i}^{z}{F}_{i}^{z}{Q}_{i}$ term when coupling with polar optic phonons is taken into account. When the lattice motion is so anharmonic that the lattice ions move in a double-well potential, and the proton-lattice coupling so strong that the protons can tunnel in only one out of the two possible lattice configurations, two Curie temperatures may appear.

Abstract: A group of 215 U.S. and 188 Brazilian urban, middle class children ages 10 and 11 completed a 4-item questionnaire about death. The responses were categorized and compared. The authors came to the following conclusions: Significant differences in thoughts about death appear to be cultural and specifically tied to sex role expectations. Patterns of thoughts about death appear to be more consistent among the Brazilian than the U.S. children. It appears that religion strongly influences the Brazilian girls' conceptualizations of death but not the other children's in the sample. Although there were many differences in concepts of death between the U.S. and the Brazilian children, there were also numerous similarities.

TL;DR: It is believed that, under similar conditions, Pomacea haustrum - and, by extension, P. canaliculata - may be successfully used in the biological control of the intermediate hosts of S. mansoni, or, at least, of becoming predominant, with no damage to the new ecosystems.
Abstract: In the region of Baldim, MG (Brazil) - a well-known Schistosoma mansoni endemic area where transmission control had already been unsuccessfully attempted through molluscicide, sanitary education and clinical treatment - 5,421 specimens of Pomacea haustrum (Prosobranchia, Pilidae) were introduced into 5 brooks and 2 ditches where Biomphalaria glabrata (primarily) and B. straminea (secondarily) predominated. From 1968 to 1971, the infection rate of B. glabrata by S. mansoni ranged from 2.1% to 11.9%. None of the B. straminea specimens collected, however, were seen to be liberating cercariae of this trematode. After the introduction of Pilidae, only once were two positive B. glabrata specimens (1.8%) detected. A decrease in the planorbide population was observed, as well as an increase in the pomacea density to 20.0 and 121.6 specimens per square meter in the brooks and ditches, respectively. P. haustrum density was estimated by the "quadrat" method. Of the planorbides in the experiment, 65.2% (1,526) were collected from July/68 to July/72 and the rest were obtained after the introduction of the predator-competitor species, as follows: 15.0% (352) in 1976; 16.1% (377) in 1977; and 3.7% (87) in 1978. Although transferred from a lenitic medium (Sete Lagoas, MG), the pomaceae became perfectly adapted to the lotic collections of Baldim, and proved to be capable of replacing the original B. glabrata populations of several biotopes or, at least, of becoming predominant, with no damage to the new ecosystems. Based on the data presented above and the knowledge previously acquired in the study of the biology and ecology of the species, it is believed that, under similar conditions, Pomacea haustrum (Reeve, 1856) - and, by extension, P. lineata (Spix, 1827) and P. canaliculata (Lamarck, 1822), as well as other species from the same genus - may be successfully used in the biological control of the intermediate hosts of S. mansoni.

TL;DR: In this article, a mechanism based on anharmonic elasticity and the critical behavior of the strains around dislocations is proposed for the ciritical static central peak seen in light scattering from K${H}}_{2}$P${\mathrm{O}}_{4}
Abstract: A mechanism, based on anharmonic elasticity and the critical behavior of the strains around dislocations, is proposed for the ciritical static central peak seen in light scattering from K${\mathrm{H}}_{2}$P${\mathrm{O}}_{4}$ and K${\mathrm{H}}_{3}$${(\mathrm{S}\mathrm{e}{\mathrm{O}}_{3})}_{2}$. It is shown that the main source of the anomaly is the ferroelasticity occurring in both crystals, though ferroelectricity in K${\mathrm{H}}_{2}$PO also enhances the scattering.
