Abstract: A ocorrencia de toxoplasmose aguda em tres membros de uma mesma familia foi relacionada a ingestao de leite de cabra, nao pasteurizado e nem fervido. As cabras eram criadas soltas no peridomicilio para fornecimento de leite. Anticorpos fluorescentes anti-Toxoplasma foram detectados nos quinze animais examinados, sendo que oito caprinos apresentaram titulos superiores a 1:1024 e nas cinco cabras lactantes estes titulos variaram de 1:1024 a 1:32.768. Taquizoitos foram isolados, por inovulacao em camundongos, do leite de uma destas cabras. Os caes criados na mesma casa nao apresentaram sintomas de toxoplasmose apesar de ter ocorrido perda de ninhada de uma cadela; em todos os caes foram detectados baixos niveis de anticorpos. Foi considerada menos provavel a possibilidade de que as infeccoes humanas pudessem ser devido a ingestao de alimentos contaminados com oocistos.

Abstract: Enterochromaffin cells from the small intestine of man, guinea pig, dog, chicken, rabbit, cat and rat were stained using the Masson-Fontana ammoniacal silver method with varying dilutions of silver nitrate solution (0.25 to 5 g per 100 ml of distilled water) and incubation temperatures (60 C and 75 C). The 0.5% solution of silver nitrate gave an argentaffin pattern similar to that of the 5% solution and had two major advantages: economically, since much less silver nitrate is used, and methodologically, since low background resulted with tissue of those species (rat, cat and rabbit) that required unusually long incubation. The staining of melanocytes was similar for all dilutions at the usual staining time (15-30 min).

Estas dimensoes usualmente saoexpressas em termos de intervalos para que possam servirde variaveis dependentes ou independentes em analise deregressao multipla. Estudos relacionam uma dimensao âoutra, ou relacionam grupos de dimens~s com !fatiaveiscontextuais num esforco de "explicar" a estrutura orga-nizacional (ver Child, 1973, para um exemplo tipicodesta literatura).O problema com estes estudos e que realmente naolidam com a estrutura organizacional. Abstract: In the three salivary gland regions of Bradysia hygida (Diptera, Sciaridae) the patterns of polypeptide synthesis, as revealed by electrophoresis and fluorography, are very stable during the fourth larval instar until about 30 h before the pupal molt. At this age the patterns of polypeptide synthesis start to undergo marked changes. The striking correlations between these changes and the development of two distinct groups of DNA puffs support the proposal that DNA puffs are causally related to the synthesis of specific proteins in the salivary glands.

Abstract: A method is described which permits to determine in vivo and in a short period of time (4-6 hours) the sensitivity of T. cruzi strains to known active chemotherapeutic agents. By using resistant- and sensitive T. cruzi strains a fairly good correlation was observed between the results obtained with this rapid method (which detects activity against the circulating blood forms) and those obtained with long-term schedules which involve drug administration for at least 20 consecutive days and a prolonged period of assessment. This method may be used to characterize susceptibility to active drugs used clinically, provide information on the specific action against circulating trypomastigotes and screen active compounds.

Abstract: The pathological systematized study of the brain of 31 cases of the chronic cardiac form of Chagas' disease was undertaken. Elective parenchymatous necrosis was found in 64.5% of cases, mainly in cerebellar Purkinje cells, and in thalamic nuclei. Also found were multiple foci of old micronecrosis (51.6%) mostly in the cerebral cortex, old cerebral infarcts (22.6%), cortical laminar necrosis (16.1%) and cerebral cortical atrophy (3.2%). These findings are not specific and can be explained by thromboembolic phenomena and hypoxemia following from congestive heart failure and disturbances of the cardiac rhythm.

Abstract: Com o objetivo de se conhecer a fauna de Sarcophagidae da regiao de Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, e se obter dados sobre seu comportamento, foram realizadas capturas sistematicas em tres areas ecologicamente distintas, pelo periodo de um ano (maio de 1980 a abril de 1981). Para as capturas, foram utilizadas dois tipos de armadilhas apropriadas e cinco tipos de iscas; peixe cru, carcaca de camundongo, v´sceras de galinha, banana amassada com rapadura e fezes humanas. Foi capturado um total de 10.097 especimens, dos quais foram estudados 9.582 exemplares, representados por 25 especies. O indice de sinantropia foi determinado segundo a metodologia de Nuorteva (1963). Foram obtidos indices variaveis de sinantropia para as 25 especies analisadas, sendo as mais sinantropicas Parasarcophaga ruficornis (IS = + 94,7) e Bercaea haemorrhoidalis (IS = + 84,3), e as mais assinantropicas Euboettcheria florencioi (IS = - 98,8) e Oxysarcodexia augusta (IS = - 96,9).

Abstract: The tumoral form of schistosomiasis mansoni is rare and has not been described in the brain, in which schistosome eggs usually elicit a granulomatous inflammation. A 20-year-old Brazilian man had the tumoral form of schistosomiasis of the cerebellum which was treated surgically. Histological study of the excised cerebellar mass demonstrated a massive granulomatous reaction around Schistosoma mansoni eggs and massive necrotic areas. To our knowledge, this is the first case of schistosomiasis mansoni of the brain presenting as a posterior fossa mass with the characteristic necrotic granulomas.

Abstract: After examining the type of Lutzomyia (Lutzomyia) cruzi (Mangabeira, 1938), kept in the collection of the Instituto Oswaldo Cruz (Rio de Janeiro), under number 941, and 74 male specimens of the species, mostly from the type locality (Camapuan, State of Mato Grosso do Sul), the Authors verified that the basal tuft of the coxite is composed of only four foliaceous setae, and not six, as stated by Mangabeira, due the superposition of the two coxites holotype. A redescription of the male based on the holotype and a description of the previously unknown female are presented.

Para isto utilizamos armadilhas e iscas atrativas adequadas para a captura destes dipteros. Foi capturado um total de 10.097 especimes, dos quais 9.582, representados por 25 especies, foram estudados e analisados sob diferentes aspectos. neste trabalho apresentamos a distribuicao sazonal da familia Sacophagidae, bem como a distribuicao anual observada para cada uma das 25 especies.

Abstract: A rodent ectoparasite survey was made in the city of Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil, from June 1980 to September 1982. The species of ectoparasites captured from 950 Rattus norvegicus norvegicus were: Xenopsylla cheopis, Ctenocephalides felis felis, Polyplax spinulosa, Laelaps nuttalli, Echinolaelaps echidninus and Atricholaelaps glasgowi, the last species only represented by three specimens interchanged with wild rodent. P. spinulosa and L. nuttalli, although cosmopolitan, are recorded for the first time in State of Minas Gerais. The sex ratio of the ectoparasites, as well as the prevalence of fleas, mites and lice on the separate sexes of rodents are presented. 66.9% of the rats were infested by mites, almost twice more than infestations by fleas and louse jointly (39%). L. nuttalli was found in great numbers and presented the highest index of infestation: 55.1%. Single infestations are as common as associated ones. P. spinulosa, contrary to L. nuttalli, rarely occurs in single infestation. Data on the distribution of the ectoparasites on the rodents are also reported. The infestation observed in Belo Horizonte is confronted with those obtained by other authors in different places.

As duas primeiras especies parasitam ovos de Erinnyis ello (desfolhador da mandioca) e a ultima parasita os ovos de Psorocampa denticulata (desfolhador do eucalipto). E proposta ainda a formacao de um novo grupo para T. caiaposi e T. acacioi.
