TL;DR: The model of the near-cathode plasma, developed previously for the case of a single-species plasma-producing gas, is generalized for the cases of multiple plasma producing species as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: The model of the near-cathode plasma, developed previously for the case of a single-species plasma-producing gas, is generalized for the case of multiple plasma-producing species. Results are presented of calculation of a diffuse mode of current transfer to tungsten cathodes in a mercury plasma with an addition of sodium. It is found that the presence of 1% of sodium results in a considerable expansion of the range of stability of the diffuse mode.

TL;DR: In this article, the potential of the volatile composition of saliva samples as biosignatures for breast cancer (BC) non-invasive diagnosis was explored, where 106 saliva samples of BC patients and controls in two distinct geographic regions in Portugal and India were extracted and analysed using optimised headspace solid-phase microextraction gas chromatography mass spectrometry (HS-SPME/GC-MS).
Abstract: Saliva is possibly the easiest biofluid to analyse and, despite its simple composition, contains relevant metabolic information. In this work, we explored the potential of the volatile composition of saliva samples as biosignatures for breast cancer (BC) non-invasive diagnosis. To achieve this, 106 saliva samples of BC patients and controls in two distinct geographic regions in Portugal and India were extracted and analysed using optimised headspace solid-phase microextraction gas chromatography mass spectrometry (HS-SPME/GC-MS, 2 mL acidified saliva containing 10% NaCl, stirred (800 rpm) for 45 min at 38 °C and using the CAR/PDMS SPME fibre) followed by multivariate statistical analysis (MVSA). Over 120 volatiles from distinct chemical classes, with significant variations among the groups, were identified. MVSA retrieved a limited number of volatiles, viz. 3-methyl-pentanoic acid, 4-methyl-pentanoic acid, phenol and p-tert-butyl-phenol (Portuguese samples) and acetic, propanoic, benzoic acids, 1,2-decanediol, 2-decanone, and decanal (Indian samples), statistically relevant for the discrimination of BC patients in the populations analysed. This work defines an experimental layout, HS-SPME/GC-MS followed by MVSA, suitable to characterise volatile fingerprints for saliva as putative biosignatures for BC non-invasive diagnosis. Here, it was applied to BC samples from geographically distant populations and good disease separation was obtained. Further studies using larger cohorts are therefore very pertinent to challenge and strengthen this proof-of-concept study.

18 Sep 2006TL;DR: The algorithm is to be used by systems to discover semantic Web services, such as the UDDI, that are annotated with concepts with and without a common ontology commitment.
Abstract: This paper presents an algorithm to match a semantic Web service request against semantic Web service advertisements. The algorithm is to be used by systems to discover semantic Web services, such as the UDDI. Matching is based on the assessment of the similarity among semantic Web service properties, such as inputs and outputs. Semantic Web services have their inputs and outputs annotated or described by ontological concepts. The algorithm is able to match a semantic Web service request against advertisements that are annotated with concepts with and without a common ontology commitment. The similarity of inputs and outputs is evaluated based on concepts (classes), their semantic relations, and their common and distinguishing features (properties)

TL;DR: The current study evaluates the impact of using different BC matrixes (drained, freeze-dried and regenerated) and different synthesis conditions to improve the inherent properties of BC, which were monitored through FTIR-ATR, EDX, XRD, SEM, AFM, swelling, contact angle measurement and IGC.

TL;DR: Some of the most interesting MEPS and SPME applications are explored, focusing on recent trends and applications to medical diagnostic, particularly the in vivo and near real time applications.
Abstract: The human population continues to grow exponentially in the fast developing and most populated countries, whereas in Western Europe it is getting older and older each year. This inevitably raises the demand for better and more efficient medical services without increasing the economic burden in the same proportion. To meet these requirements, improvement of medical diagnosis is certainly a key aspect to consider. Therefore, we need powerful analytical methodologies able to go deeper and further in the characterization of human metabolism and identification of disease biomarkers and endogenous molecules in body fluids and tissues. The ultimate goal is to have a reliable and early medical diagnosis, mitigating the disease complications as much as possible. Microextraction techniques (METs) represent a key step in these analytical methodologies by providing samples in the suitable volumes and purification levels necessary for the characterization of the target analytes. In this aspect, solid-phase microextraction (SPME) and, more recently, microextraction by packed sorbent (MEPS), are powerful sample preparation techniques, characterized by their reduced time of analysis, low solvent consumption, and broad application. Moreover, as miniaturized techniques, they can be easily automatized to have a high-throughput performance in the clinical environment. In this review, we explore some of the most interesting MEPS and SPME applications, focusing on recent trends and applications to medical diagnostic, particularly the in vivo and near real time applications.
