TL;DR: In this paper, the notion of a conflict between two subsystems, logical and linguistic, is used in a developmental perspective to account, in a unified manner, for the observed discrepancy between subjects' behavior in deductive and inductive reasoning tasks and predictions based on formal logic.
Abstract: After a review of recent work connected with Grice's maxims of conversation, special attention is paid to the principles related to the concept of informativeness. The operation of those principles constrains logic by limiting the meaning of logical particles and, more importantly, by contradicting axioms and many theorems of the propositional calculus. It is argued that, as the development of the individual's formal operations proceeds, a conflict with laws of language use arises. The notion of a conflict between two subsystems, logical and linguistic, is used in a developmental perspective to account, in a unified manner, for the observed discrepancy between subjects' behavior in deductive and inductive reasoning tasks and predictions based on formal logic.

Abstract: This paper presents two simple non-Gaussian first-order autoregressive markovian processes which are easy to simulate via a computer. The autoregressive Gamma process {Xn:} is constructed according to the stochastic difference equation Xn:=Vn:Xn−1+∊n:, where {∊n:} is an i.i.d. Exponential sequence and {Vn:} is i.i.d. with Power-function distribution defined on the interval [0,1). The autoregressive Weibull process {Xn:} is constructed from the probabilistic model Xn:= k.min (Xn−1:, Yn:) where {Yn:} is an i.i.d. Weibull sequence and k > 1.

TL;DR: Glutathione S-transferase can be detected in both terrestrial and aquatic molluscs and was found to be present not only in the soluble fraction but also in the microsomes and mitochondria.
Abstract: 1. 1. Glutathione S-transferase can be detected in both terrestrial and aquatic molluscs. The enzyme is ubiquitiously distributed in the tissues of the mollusc, Achatina fulica. 2. 2. The kidney has the highest amount of activity on per gram basis when compared to other organs. 3. 3. The enzyme was found to be present not only in the soluble fraction but also in the microsomes and mitochondria. 4. 4. 100,000g supernatants from kidney homogenates contain isoenzymes that bind to both DEAE-Sephadex and CM-Cellulose columns. 5. 5. Such supematants can be resolved into four acidic and one basic form by isoelectric focussing. 6. 6. The enzyme is able to conjugate GSH on to DNCB, methyl iodide and p-nitrobenzyl chloride while it is unable to do the same with 1,2-epoxy-3-(p-nitrophenoxy) propane and ethacrynic acid. 7. 7. The molecular weight of the enzyme is about 40,000 daltons.

Abstract: It is shown that for supersymmetry to be manifest at nonzero temperatures, the thermal averages of all the auxiliary fields must vanish. It therefore follows that broken supersymmetry at zero temperature is never restored. But supersymmetry that is manifest at zero temperature may or may not be broken at nonzero temperatures. Several illustrative examples are considered.

TL;DR: The concept of madina, as religious centre, administrative capital and economic pivot for a society, state or kingdom, expressed in the Islamic concept of Madina (Gibbs and Kramers 1961: 291; Lapidus 1969: 69) pre-dates Muslim influence in Southeast Asia as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: The concept of the city as religious centre, administrative capital and economic pivot for a society, state or kingdom, expressed in the Islamic concept of madina (Gibbs and Kramers 1961: 291; Lapidus 1969: 69) pre-dates Muslim influence in Southeast Asia. The physical as well as functional characteristics of the Southeast Asian city, deriving from its urban features, as distinct from its rural surroundings, were a culmination of gradual evolution since the rise, about the middle of the second century A.D., of the first trading ports and cities. The distinction between the city as urban centre and its rural surroundings is attested in the traditional Javanese view of the negara. In the fourteenth century Nawanatya the negara is defined as ‘all where one can go out (of his compound) without passing through paddy fields’ (Pigeaud 1960, 3: 121). It is by virtue of their evolutionary origins through their total symbiosis with the surrounding rural peripheries that Middle-Eastern and Southeast Asian cities, even pre-dating Islam, contrasted significantly with the cities of Medieval Christendom with formally constituted municipal laws and corporate institutions (Hourani 1970: 15).1 The pre-eminence of cities in their composite role as capitals for religious, political and economic activity was a significant feature of the historical evolution of pre-modern Southeast Asia and will constitute the definition of a city within the purview of this survey.

TL;DR: Column chromatographic and GCMS analyses for minor and trace noncarotenoid hydrocarbons of crude palm oil and palm fatty acid distillate revealed the presence of a wide range of n-alkanes (C12H26 to C36H74) and nalkenes in addition to the major component, squalene as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: Column chromatographic and gas chromatographic-mass spectroscopic (GCMS) analyses for minor and trace noncarotenoid hydrocarbons of crude palm oil and palm fatty acid distillate revealed the presence of a wide range of n-alkanes (C12H26 to C36H74) and n-alkenes in addition to the major component, squalene. Hydrocarbon components concentrated in palm fatty acid distillate where squalene was dominant, but degradation products such as alkenes (from fatty acids or glycerides), aromatic hydrocarbons (from carotenes) and diterpene hydrocarbons (from tocotrienols) were detected in significant quantities, superseding the naturally occurring n-alkanes. Mechanisms proposed suggest that degradation of the valuable vitamin E or tocotrienols needs to be minimized in physical refining.

TL;DR: In this article, it was shown that if the two blocks of a connected graph G are H and K2, then G is chromatically unique if and only if H is vertex-transitive and chromatic unique.
Abstract: We proved that if a connected graph is chromatically unique, then it has at most two blocks. Furthermore each of these blocks is vertex-transitive and chromatically unique. It is then shown that if the two blocks of a connected graph G are H and K2, then G is chromatically unique if and only if H is vertex-transitive and chromatically unique. This answers a conjecture of Whitehead and Zhao in the affirmative.

TL;DR: Soldier defense secretions of the genusHospitalitermes were chemically analyzed by GC-MS and were found to contain volatile monoterpenes and polyoxygenated diterpenes, indicating that colonies of this species can be separable into two chemically distinct groups.
Abstract: Soldier defense secretions of the genusHospitalitermes (Isoptera, Termitidae, Nasutitermitinae) were chemically analyzed by GC-MS and were found to contain volatile monoterpenes and polyoxygenated diterpenes. Interspecific and intraspecific chemical variations forH. umbrinus, H. hospitalis, H. flaviventris, andH. bicolor are described. Interspecific variations in monoterpene and diterpene structures and compositions were evident. A remarkable example of large intraspecific variation from a single species was observed inH. umbrinus, indicating that colonies of this species can be separable into two chemically distinct groups. The diterpenes found in one of these groups have unusually high molecular weights.

TL;DR: In this paper, a bivariate generalisation of the non-central negative binomial distribution is considered, which is constructed as a latent structure model, as an extension of an accident proneness model investigated by Edwards/Gurland (1961), and as a reversible stochastic counter model.
Abstract: Another bivariate generalisation (Type V) of the non-central negative binomial distribution is considered. This generalisation is constructed (i) as a latent structure model; (ii) as an extension of an accident proneness model investigated by Edwards/Gurland (1961); and (iii) as a reversible stochastic counter model. The third construction gives, as a result, an apparently new formulation of the Edwards/Gurland model. The probabilities, moments, recurrence formulas and some properties are given. An application to the data used by Holgate (1966) is considered.
