TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used hierarchical regression analysis to examine the relation between the predictor variables of counselor's race, mistrust level, and clients' sex on the criterion variable of premature termination from counseling.
Abstract: Black clients, visiting a community mental health center for the first time were identified and administered an inventory designed to assess the extent to which they trust whites. Equal numbers of clients were then assigned to a black and to a white counselor for an intake interview. Hierarchical regression analyses were then used to examine the relation between the predictor variables of counselor's race, mistrust level, and clients' sex on the criterion variable of premature termination from counseling. Significant percentages of shared variance were found between termination rates and the predictor * variables of counselors' race and trust level as well as the interaction of counselor's race and trust level. No significant amount of shared variance was found between sex of clients and termination rates. Some implications for counseling are discussed.

TL;DR: This algorithm is a 1966 American National Standard FORTRAN implementation of the methods discussed in [1] and [2].
Abstract: This algorithm is a 1966 American National Standard FORTRAN implementation of the methods discussed in [1] and [2]. The software consists of a set of triangulation modules (which have application in problems other than interpolation) and a set of interpolation modules that require the triangulation routines. The triangulation software constructs a Thiessen triangulatiofi of a set of N nodes (x,, y,), i = 1 . . . . . N, arbitrarily distributed in the x-y plane. Only 7N storage locations are required to represent the triangulation and the software provides the capability of updating the data structure with the addition of a new node. Given data values z, associated with the nodes, the interpolation problem is to construct a C 1 function F such that

TL;DR: A new silicon picosecond nonlinear-optical energy regulator for 1-microm radiation that clamps the output at a constant value and attributes this optical Zener action to nonlinear refraction and absorption induced in the silicon by the intensepicosecond pulses.
Abstract: We demonstrate a new silicon picosecond nonlinear-optical energy regulator for 1-μm radiation. The device has a high transmission for low input energies and a low transmission for high input energies and clamps the output at a constant value. We attribute this optical Zener action to nonlinear refraction and absorption induced in the silicon by the intense picosecond pulses.

TL;DR: In this paper, the attitudes and feelings of male and female college, high school, and junior high school varsity basketball players toward having a female coach versus a male coach were investigated.
Abstract: This investigation was done to gather some exploratory data concerning the attitudes and feelings of male and female college, high school, and junior high school varsity basketball players toward having a female coach versus a male coach. Subjects (N = 85) indicated their attitudes for playing for a hypothetical male or female coach (randomly assigned to condition) in a 2 x 2 (sex of athlete x sex of coach) between-subjects design. They were instructed to complete a questionnaire consisting of 11 items that tapped their attitudes and feelings toward a new coach. Identical background information was provided to subjects concerning the qualifications of the coach, the only difference being that for one group of subjects the coach was said to be female whereas for the other group of subjects the coach was said to be a male. Results were analyzed by a MANOVA and indicated significant interactions on seven questions, with simple main effects consistently indicating that males displayed more negative attitudes ...

TL;DR: Experiments are described which show that pairs of Perlinella drymo effectively transmit and receive signals at minimum distances of 8 m through a continuous wooden rod, 5-9 mm in diameter, which is satisfactory for communication for shorter distances.
Abstract: The use of comparative larval morphology and drumming behavior in stonefly systematics is discussed. A tentative assignment of plesiobehavioric and apobehavioric states to drumming in Plecoptera is made, based upon the described behavior of 46 North American species, representing 8 families and 25 genera. Experiments are described which show that pairs of Perlinella drymo effectively transmit and receive signals at minimum distances of 8 m through a continuous wooden rod, 5-9 mm in diameter. Communication was achieved for shorter distances of 10-200 cm by male and female P. drymo drumming in manilla paper boxes resting on foam rubber pads. Pairs of P. drymo were unable to communicate at distances of 25 cm on a 4.2 kg rock, nor were Pteronarcella badia (Hagen) at a distance of 25 cm, when male and female were on separate, dried aspen limbs.

TL;DR: In this article, experimental results unambiguously show the association of laser-induced ripple structures on material surfaces with defects and a reduction of damage thresholds for surfaces with controlled linear defects aligned orthogonal to the incident laser field.
Abstract: Laser-induced ripple structures on material surfaces have been observed by a number of workers for various materials including metals, semiconductors, and dielectrics. A model has been proposed [1] which correctly accounts for the spacing and polarization dependence of the ripples, and the association of the ripples with material defects. In this letter, experimental results which unambiguously show the association of these features with defects are presented. Quantitative measurements of laser-induced damage thresholds show a reduction of damage thresholds for surfaces with controlled linear defects aligned orthogonal to the incident laser field (as predicted in [1]).

Abstract: We demonstrate intracavity degenerate four-wave mixing in the saturable gain medium of a dye laser. The dye laser is a synchronously pumped bidirectional ring laser that produces pulses of 4 ps duration. The dynamics of the interaction provides information on the phase coherence of the pulses. A simple theory of transient degenerate four-wave mixing is presented that accurately describes the measurements.

TL;DR: The experience of families who contacted a child and family community mental health treatment center, but then did not follow through to receive even one session of diagnosis or treatment at the agency is examined.
Abstract: This article examines the experience of families who contacted a child and family community mental health treatment center, but then did not follow through to receive even one session of diagnosis or treatment at the agency. The paper reports the base rate for this behavior in a large (N = 2,358) sample of cases who either only made inquiry or who received treatment at the agency. The inquiry group, or "teasers," tended to have children who were older than client groups, to have relatively more behavioral and fewer personality problems, to have demonstrated problems earlier than client groups, and to have parents who were slightly older. A follow-up study was conducted with 100 inquiry and 100 client cases. The relative efficacy of telephone and written questionnaire methodologies are compared, demonstrating that the telephone approach was more effective. Client-group children were reported to be only moderately better off at the time of follow-up than the inquiry group, but conclusions about the effects of treatment are limited by the finding that many members of the inquiry group had sought treatment elsewhere after their brief contact with the agency. Implications of this study for community mental health administration and for future research in this area are discussed.

TL;DR: The authors conducted research to measure the effect of temperature on methemoglobin formation and recovery in nitrite-exposed channel catfish and found that higher temperatures always increase toxicity.
Abstract: The relationship between nitrite concentration and degree of methemoglobinemia has been documented in catfish; however, the influence of temperature on this process has not been examined. In light of the effects of temperature on the movement of chemicals, it is tempting to hypothesize that higher temperatures always increase toxicity. A temperature change may result in an increase, decrease or no change in the toxicity of a chemical pollutant. The authors conducted research to measure the effect of temperature on methemoglobin formation and recovery in nitrite-exposed channel catfish.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors evaluated the use of industry-specific multiple discriminant functions for predicting bond ratings and found that the results support using such a technique, although the exact bond rating process used by the rating agencies is not known.
Abstract: Previous statistical models designed to predict bond ratings use a variety of financial data and ratios; however, the possible effect of the industry in which the firms operate is generally disregarded. Although the exact bond rating process used by the rating agencies is not known, industry analysis is an important component of the process. This study evaluates the use of industry-specific multiple discriminant functions for predicting bond ratings. The results support using such a technique.

TL;DR: In this article, stress inoculation training was not singularly effective in reducing test anxiety, variations in such within its treatment group only were correlated with improvements in performance on the Letter Sets Test, a measure of fluid ability.
Abstract: Elderly students (n = 29), aged 50‐67, with self‐reported problems of test anxiety were randomly assigned to their stress inoculation training, attention placebo, or waiting‐list control conditions. Treatment rationales were equally credible across groups. Results suggested that while stress inoculation training was not singularly effective in reducing test anxiety, variations in such within its treatment group only were correlated with improvements in performance on the Letter Sets Test, a measure of fluid ability. No such interactions occurred in the attention placebo or control groups. Data are discussed with reference to the efficacy of cognitive interventions as a means by which to facilitate adult intellectual performance, and suggestions for future research in this area are offered.

TL;DR: Out-group comparisons utilizing drumming data from 50 North American species in eight families indicate that drumming signal production by rubbing in some Perlidae is a derived character.
Abstract: The drumming of Acroneuria evoluta and Doroneuria baumanni is described for the first time, and additional signals of A. lycorias and Phasganophora capitata are reported. The three-way signals of A. evoluta are the most complex yet reported in Plecoptera; males call with diphasic signals produced by combinations of abdominal tapping and rubbing, females answer with 4.8 ± 1.5 beats spaced at 48.0 ± 4.2 ms intervals and males reply with tapping signals of 5.9 ± 0.8 beats. Male D. baumanni call with two prolonged rubs of the hammer on the substratum, and females answer with 9.1 ± 0.7 beats spaced at 129.6 ± 5.0 ms. Females also occasionally drum without a male call stimulus. P. capitata males call with tapping signals of 14.0 ± 5.5 beats spaced at 411.9 ± 19.9 ms, and females answer with an unusually long sequence of 145.1 ± 54.5 beats having 418.1 ± 33.5 ms intervals. Female A. lycorias answer taped male signals with 5.8 ± 1.3 beats having 50.9 ± 7.6 ms intervals. Out-group comparisons utilizing drumming data from 50 North American species in eight families indicate that drumming signal production by rubbing in some Perlidae is a derived character. Ancestral and derived expressions of almost all the basic character states known for drumming in Plecoptera are exhibited in the 16 Nearctic Perlidae species whose signals have been described.

TL;DR: The authors examined the influence of topic level and relationship level on self and other as loci of emotional reactions to interactions and found that self satisfaction was more strongly related to communication satisfaction for low topic intimacy and importance, and for the lowest level of relationship intimacy (acquaintances).
Abstract: This study examined the influence of topic level and relationship level on self and other as loci of emotional reactions to interactions. Findings indicate that self satisfaction was more strongly related to communication satisfaction for low topic intimacy and importance, and for the lowest level of relationship intimacy (acquaintances). On the other hand, satisfaction with other was more strongly related to communication satisfaction for high topic intimacy and importance, and higher levels of relationship intimacy (friends). Lovers and spouses, however, did not conform to this pattern. The findings, which were derived from a community sample, were compared to those of a previous study which had sampled college students.
