TL;DR: Ab2-GPI assays are superior to aCL assays for diagnosis of APS and the combined use of both assays enhance positive testing results in up to 75% of patients with APS at any stage of illness.
Abstract: Background: Testing for the antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) using anticardiolipin antibodies (aCL) has been problematic. Titers may fluctuate or even become negative. Anti-beta 2 glycoprotein I assays (ab2-GPI) may be more reliable for diagnosis. Methods: In a prospective, blinded study over a nine-month period we retested all patients seen for routine follow-up visits in our clinic who had previously been evaluated for aCL-associated illnesses. Patients were stratified into two groups: group A—patients previously positive (/) for aCL; group B—patients previously negative (7) for aCL. Both groups were further classified according to disease severity. Patients were retested for both aCL and ab2-GPI (isotypes G, M, A for each) using uniform testing standards. Results: 118 patients with previously positive aCL (group A) were retested. Repeat aCL were positive in 52=118 (44%), ab2-GPI positive in 69=118 (58%) and 82=118 (69.5%) were positive for one or both assays. In patients with serious organ damage (92% wit...

TL;DR: In this article, a large number of metallic veins have been found in the Portales Valley (H6) meteorite and these veins appear to have been produced by shock-metamorphic processes, which produced a >20 km diameter impact crater on an H-chondrite planetesimal.
Abstract: — A shower of meteorite fragments fell at ∼0730 h local time on 1998 June 13 near the town of Portales, New Mexico. Thus far, 51 pieces of the Portales Valley (H6) meteorite have been recovered. This meteorite has an unusually large number of metallic veins. Some of these veins are also unusually thick, having widths on the order of centimeters. These wide veins have fine Widmanstatten structure, which is the first time it has been seen in an ordinary chondrite. This structure indicates the metallic veins and the host chondrite cooled slowly. These veins appear to have been produced by shock-metamorphic processes, which we infer produced a >20 km diameter impact crater on an H-chondrite planetesimal.

TL;DR: An 8-year retrospective comparative hospital-based cohort study is analysing singleton pregnancy comorbidities and delivery parameters of a teenage group under the age of 20 compared with a young adult group 20–24 years of age in a university hospital.
Abstract: Aim. To determine pregnancy and delivery outcomes among teenagers. Materials and Methods. An 8-year retrospective comparative hospital-based cohort study is analysing singleton pregnancy comorbidities and delivery parameters of a teenage group under the age of 20 compared with a young adult group 20–24 years of age in a university hospital. Results. Teenage is a risk factor for preterm birth <37 weeks (1.21 [1.08–1.35]), foetal growth restriction (1.34 [1.21–1.48]), episiotomy (1.27 [1.21–1.34]), uterine revision (1.15 [1.06–1.25]), APGAR <7 at 1 min (2.42 [1.21–1.67]), cephalopelvic disproportion (1.26 [1.07–1.48]), and postpartum haemorrhage (1.42 [1.25–1.62]); however, caesarean delivery occurs less frequently in teenagers than in adults (0.75 [0.70–0.80]). The following comorbidities are risk factors for teenage pregnancy (risk ratio [CI 95%]): anaemia (1.13 [1.10–1.17]), low urinary tract infection (1.10 [1.03–1.18]), pediculosis (2.42 [1.90–3.00]), anogenital condyloma (1.50 [1.04–2.17]), and trichomoniasis (1.74 [1.12–2.68]). The risks for hepatitis B and hepatitis C, premature rupture of membranes, and placenta praevia were lower compared with those in the young adult group, respectively, 0.43 (0.26–0.71), 0.90 (0.85–0.96), and 0.29 (0.20–0.41), while the risk for gestational diabetes and preeclampsia were the same in both groups. Conclusion. Considering the high risks for teenage pregnancy, this information should be provided to pregnant adolescent women and their caregivers.

TL;DR: Underprivileged toddlers who were deprived of sunlight had a much greater incidence of hypovitaminosis D and frank rickets, which underscores the necessity for sunlight exposure in young children.
Abstract: Objective To study the role of sunlight exposure in determining the vitamin D status of underprivileged toddlers.
