Abstract: The Second Workshop on Extreme Precision Radial Velocities defined circa 2015 the state of the art Doppler precision and identified the critical path challenges for reaching 10 cm s^(−1) measurement precision. The presentations and discussion of key issues for instrumentation and data analysis and the workshop recommendations for achieving this bold precision are summarized here. Beginning with the High Accuracy Radial Velocity Planet Searcher spectrograph, technological advances for precision radial velocity (RV) measurements have focused on building extremely stable instruments. To reach still higher precision, future spectrometers will need to improve upon the state of the art, producing even higher fidelity spectra. This should be possible with improved environmental control, greater stability in the illumination of the spectrometer optics, better detectors, more precise wavelength calibration, and broader bandwidth spectra. Key data analysis challenges for the precision RV community include distinguishing center of mass (COM) Keplerian motion from photospheric velocities (time correlated noise) and the proper treatment of telluric contamination. Success here is coupled to the instrument design, but also requires the implementation of robust statistical and modeling techniques. COM velocities produce Doppler shifts that affect every line identically, while photospheric velocities produce line profile asymmetries with wavelength and temporal dependencies that are different from Keplerian signals. Exoplanets are an important subfield of astronomy and there has been an impressive rate of discovery over the past two decades. However, higher precision RV measurements are required to serve as a discovery technique for potentially habitable worlds, to confirm and characterize detections from transit missions, and to provide mass measurements for other space-based missions. The future of exoplanet science has very different trajectories depending on the precision that can ultimately be achieved with Doppler measurements.

Abstract: The development of a green and facile strategy for fabricating ecofriendly, highly effective flame retardants has remain a major challenge. Herein, supermolecular aggregates of piperazine (PiP) and phytic acid (PA) have been self-assembled onto the graphene oxide (GO) surface in water to fabricate functionalized GO (PPGO). The chemical structure and morphology of PPGO are determined by the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy along with the energy dispersive spectroscopy. Due to the introduction of organic component onto the surface of graphene oxide, the adhesion between PPGO and the epoxy resin (EP) matrix is enhanced. As a result, the storage modulus (E′) of EP composites is increased in addition to a better dispersion of PPGO. Compared with the pure EP, the flame resistance of EP/PPGO is significantly improved, exhibiting a 42% decrease in peak heat release rate (pHRR), 22% reduction in total heat release (THR). The reduced flammability of EP is attributed to the synergistic effects afforded by the gas dilution effect of piperazine, char-forming promotion effect of phytic acid and the creation of "tortuous path" barrier effect of GO during burning. This work offers a green and facile approach for creating highly effective graphene-based flame retardants.

Abstract: Detrital-zircon age spectra have been determined for sedimentary rocks from the Delamerian orogen, southern Australia. In Neoproterozoic sedimentary rocks, patterns progressively change from Mesoproterozoic- to Neoproterozoic-dominated detritus and there are few zircons that are close to the depositional age. The base of the Cambrian Kanmantoo Group marks an abrupt change in provenance to detrital patterns dominated by Ross and Delamerian (600–500 Ma) and Grenvillean ages (1200–1000 Ma). These patterns are strikingly similar to those obtained from Lachlan fold belt sedimentary rocks, indicating that the sedimentation recorded in the Kanmantoo Group marks a change from deposition of sediments derived from the Australian cratons to those representative of the early Paleozoic Gondwana mudpile. If sedimentary rocks with zircon-provenance characteristics such as those of the Kanmantoo rocks extend under elements of the Lachlan fold belt, they would provide suitable protoliths for the S-type granites of southeastern Australia.
