TL;DR: The constitutional justifiability of euthanasia will depend upon interpretation of the right to life and theright to respect for and protection of one's dignity and Western, African and Islamic approaches will be compared.
Abstract: The constitutional justifiability of euthanasia will depend upon interpretation of the right to life and the right to respect for and protection of one's dignity. Pertinent issues arising hereto are: In our new value-based constitutional interpretation, what are the values underlying our multi-cultural society? Issues of death and dying are inter-linked to a civilization's world view and its approach to human dignity. Western, African and Islamic approaches will be compared. Does euthanasia negate the essential content of the right to life and is its limitation on such right reasonable/justifiable in an open and democratic society based on freedom and equality.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated space in the short story "Uthingo Iwenkosazana" in both the story-level and the text-level, and pointed out that the characters find themselves mainly in two sub-spaces, and that the two major characters have to cross the borders of each other's spaces on the day of the crisis.
Abstract: Space in the short story ‘Uthingo Iwenkosazana’ is investigated in this article in the story-level as well as the text-level. During the discussion of theoretical issues, reference is also made to other short stories from Ntuli's oeuvre. It is pointed out that the characters find themselves mainly in two sub-spaces, and that the two major characters have to cross the borders of each other's spaces on the day of the crisis. Of cardinal importance, however, is the existence of a third sub-space: the space of the ancestors. Lastly, mention is made of the symbolic value of the rainbow.

TL;DR: Louw's distinction between a "national" and "colonial" literature is examined in terms of Ricoeur's oppositional analysis of ideology and utopia in his Lectures on Ideology and Utopia as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: Summary Focussing on N.P. van Wyk Louw's first two collections of critical essays, Berigte te velde (1939) and Lojale verset (1939), this article considers Louw's recontextualising of the concepts “nation”, “nationalism” and “national literature”. Louw's distinction between a “national” and “colonial” literature is examined in terms of Paul Ricoeur's oppositional analysis of ideology and utopia in his Lectures on Ideology and Utopia (1986). It is argued that these two sets of binary oppositions, supported by subordinate dualisms such as individual/nation and local/universal, formed the intellectual and structural premise of Louw's redefinition of the established Afrikaans critical and creative discourse of the thirties.
