TL;DR: In this article, an original, valid, and reliable measure of corporate social responsibility (CSR) reflecting the responsibilities of a business to various stakeholders is proposed. But, the measurement of CSR is still problematic.
Abstract: Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is one of the most prominent concepts in the literature and, in short, indicates the positive impacts of businesses on their stakeholders. Despite the growing body of literature on this concept, the measurement of CSR is still problematic. Although the literature provides several methods for measuring corporate social activities, almost all of them have some limitations. The purpose of this study is to provide an original, valid, and reliable measure of CSR reflecting the responsibilities of a business to various stakeholders. Based on a proposed conceptual framework of CSR, a scale was developed through a systematic scale development process. In the study, exploratory factor analysis was conducted to determine the underlying factorial structure of the scale. Data was collected from 269 business professionals working in Turkey. The results of the analysis provided a four-dimensional structure of CSR, including CSR to social and nonsocial stakeholders, employees, customers, and government.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors analyzed how CSR affects the organizational commitment of employees based on the social identity theory (SIT) and found that CSR to social and non-social stakeholders, employees, and customers were the significant predictors of organizational commitment.
Abstract: A growing number of studies have investigated the various dimensions of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in the literature. However, relatively few studies have considered its impacts on employees. The purpose of this study is to analyze how CSR affects the organizational commitment of employees based on the social identity theory (SIT). The proposed model was tested on a sample of 269 business professionals working in Turkey. The findings of the study revealed that CSR to social and non-social stakeholders, employees, and customers were the significant predictors of organizational commitment. However, there was no link between CSR to government and the commitment level of employees.

TL;DR: In this paper, a model was proposed and empirically tested on a sample of 300 university students in Turkey, where entrepreneurial intention was taken as a function of educational, relational, and structural supports, and the results showed that educational and structural support factors affect the entrepreneurial intention of students.
Abstract: – Fostering entrepreneurship needs a twofold policy that should focus on both the current situation and future prospect of entrepreneurship. Although many scholars and policy makers devote their attention to the first foci of issue, it is equally important to map out the future context of entrepreneurship. The purpose of this paper is to fill this void by analysing the impacts of some contextual factors on entrepreneurial intention of university students., – In the study, a model was proposed and empirically tested on a sample of 300 university students in Turkey. The entrepreneurial support model (ESM) considers predominantly the impact of contextual factors on entrepreneurial intention. In the model, entrepreneurial intention is taken as a function of educational, relational, and structural supports., – The results of the survey showed that educational and structural support factors affect the entrepreneurial intention of students., – The paper contributes to the literature by theorizing and empirically testing how some factors affect the entrepreneurial intention of university students. Although the study is subject to some limitations, it is believed that these limitations can be overcome with further studies., – The results of the study may have valuable implications for the policy makers and educators., – Since today's youth are the potential entrepreneurs of the future, understanding their perception about contextual factors can be a contribution to the development of the literature and an important step in designing a more effective policy mechanism.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the hypoglycemic activity of crude exopolysaccharides (EPS) produced by three mushroom isolates in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats.
Abstract: The objective of this study was to investigate the hypoglycemic activity of crude exopolysaccharides (EPS) produced by three mushroom isolates in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. The three experimental groups were fed EPS of Cerrena unicolor (Bull.) Murrill (Polyporaceae), Coprinus comatus (O.F. Mull.) Pers. (Agaricaceae), and Lenzites betulina (L.) Fr. (Polyporaceae) for 7 days. The serum glucose levels significantly decreased after oral administration of EPS by 61.23% with Cerrena unicolor, 42.78% with Coprinus comatus, and 42.08% with Lenzites betulina. According to histological observations based on staining in pancreatic tissues, Langerhans islet areas and cell numbers of diabetic animals increased in response to EPS treatment. In conclusion, our findings clearly suggest that exopolysaccharides produced by three mushroom isolates decreased blood glucose levels in STZ-induced diabetic rats. Therefore, the studied mushroom exopolysaccharides might be developed as potential oral hypoglycemic agents...

TL;DR: In this paper, the relative performance of a wide array of value at risk (VaR) models with the daily returns of Turkish (XU100) and Croatian (CROBEX) stock index prior to and during the ongoing financial crisis was investigated.
Abstract: We investigate the relative performance of a wide array of Value at Risk (VaR) models with the daily returns of Turkish (XU100) and Croatian (CROBEX) stock index prior to and during the ongoing financial crisis. In addition to widely used VaR models, we also study the behaviour of conditional and unconditional extreme value theory (EVT) and hybrid historical simulation (HHS) models to generate 95, 99 and 99.5% confidence level estimates. Results indicate that during the crisis period all tested VaR model except EVT and HHS models seriously underpredict the true level of risk, with EVT models doing so at a higher cost of capital compared to HHS model.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the risk-return relationship of REITs listed on the Istanbul Stock Exchange (ISE) in order to assess the risk and to find some empirical results for investors within the framework of modern portfolio theory (MPT) using the standard version of the capital asset pricing model (CAPM) and the single index model (SIM) over the period January 2002•June 2008.
Abstract: Purpose – The aim of this paper is to investigate the risk‐return relationship of REITs listed on the Istanbul Stock Exchange (ISE) in order to assess the risk and to find some empirical results for investors within the framework of modern portfolio theory (MPT) using the standard version of the capital asset‐pricing model (CAPM) and the single index model (SIM) over the period January 2002‐June 2008.Design/methodology/approach – Time series, cross‐sectional regression and structural literature review are employed.Findings – Results indicate that linearity assumption for both the CAPM and the SIM are rejected. It should be emphasized that the econometrical specification exposed the weaknesses of t‐test methodology for testing coefficients of regression due to the non‐normality of residuals.Originality/value – Understanding of risk and its resultant impact on the returns and evaluation of risk‐return relationship is extremely important for investors. In this regard, real estate investment trusts (REITs) as...

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the effect of financial liberalization on the aggregate total volatility of stock returns by considering the time-varying nature of the liberalization and explored the channels through which the degree of monetary liberalization impacts aggregated total volatility.
Abstract: In this study, we address whether the degree of financial liberalization affects the aggregated total volatility of stock returns by considering the time-varying nature of financial liberalization. We also explore channels through which the degree of financial liberalization impacts aggregated total volatility. We document a negative relation to the degree of financial liberalization after controlling for size, liquidity, country, and crisis effects, especially for small and medium-sized markets. Moreover, the degree of financial liberalization transmits its negative impact on aggregated total volatility through aggregated idiosyncratic and local volatilities. Overall, our results provide evidence in favor of the view that the broadening of the investor base due to the increasing degree of financial liberalization causes a reduction in the total volatility of stock returns.

TL;DR: In this paper, the effects of the mass customization concept on productivity in the manufacturing industries of Turkey were analyzed using the Two-Deflator Growth Accounting Approach. And the authors found that the price of customised products is higher.
Abstract: In the last two decades, demanding customers put manufacturing industries under the pressure of customised product orders. This market condition forced manufacturers to follow and adopt a customer-oriented philosophy. Therefore, some manufacturing industries began to change their business processes accordingly to actualise mass customisation systems. It can be inferred from this that such a big technical change must have a great impact on productivity. Therefore, this study aims to analyse the effects of the Mass Customisation (MC) concept on productivity. To measure the productivity change in the manufacturing industries of Turkey, the Two-Deflator Growth Accounting Approach is applied. In this frame, MC and Mass Production (MP) industries were compared according to their value-added, capital contribution, labour contribution and productivity. The findings contradict the current literature and imply that the price of customised products is higher. In this frame, to enhance productivity and lessen the price, some suggestions that are related to human quality upgrades and technical changes are provided.

TL;DR: Experimental results are presented that demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method for scalable coding of multi-view videos and a standard compatible approach to solve the problem.
Abstract: The Quality Layers concept is proposed and adopted in the JSVM in order to ensure an optimal adaptation in a rate-distortion sense [1]. In this paper it is extended to multi-view case for scalable coding of multi-view videos (MVV). Rate-visual-distortion optimized rate allocation among the views is necessary for efficient transport of multi-view data over the Internet. This paper addresses a standard compatible approach to solve the problem. Experimental results are presented that demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method for several multiview videos.

TL;DR: This paper addresses an effective early detection system of wildfires using high resolution images from low-light sensitive cameras linked to an innovative HS/RF (High Speed/Radio Frequency) communications grid.
Abstract: This paper addresses an effective early detection system of wildfires using high resolution images from low-light sensitive cameras linked to an innovative HS/RF (High Speed/Radio Frequency) communications grid. Using data compression techniques, a data-stream and signal management application, combined with OFDM data transmission, the HS/RF enables “broadband speed” wireless communications. This obviates the need for expensive FO cabled infrastructure in remote locations, meaning the proposed system is relatively inexpensive to deploy. In terms of forestry management the HS/RF system exhibits dual advantages; because the video-stream provides real images on the ground there should be a reduction in false-alarms, and a reduction in the decisions-time to enable a rapid response. Systems processes and specialized hardware required to support operational details are also described.

TL;DR: This paper describes the portal and Open Grid Computing Environment (OGCE) portal toolkit, and designs the architecture of the GridGIS portal, which includes authentication module, Grid Port Information Repository (GPIR) portlet, Comprehensive File Management (CFM)portlet, Grid Resource Allocation and Management (GRAM) portlets and Map Viewer portlet.
Abstract: GridGIS is the application of grid computing technology on GIS field, which aims to realize the spatial information sharing and cooperative service. However, current grid technologies are generally difficult to use, so the development and deployment of Web portals that simplifies usage of grid resources has become popular. Grid-enabled portals can thus serve as simple, single points of entry or gateway to multiple computing resources, providing access to complex grid tools and services. In this paper, we give an overview of GridGIS project and the key role of that GridGIS portal is playing in reaching its goals. Then, we describe the portal and Open Grid Computing Environment (OGCE) portal toolkit. Basing on OGCE and integrated Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) Web service, we design the architecture of the GridGIS portal. In an open source development environment, we develop and deploy GridGIS portal, which includes authentication module, Grid Port Information Repository (GPIR) portlet, Comprehensive File Management (CFM) portlet, Grid Resource Allocation and Management (GRAM) portlet and Map Viewer portlet.

TL;DR: A framework for bridging micro to macro emergence, macro-to-micro social causation, and the dialectic between emergence and social causation is presented and a meta-language approach allowing dynamic meaning generation during the interactions of the agents is offered.
Abstract: In this paper we will present a framework for bridging micro to macro emergence, macro-to-micro social causation, and the dialectic between emergence and social causation. We undertake a cultural approach for modeling communication and symbolic interaction between agents as the key element of connecting these three aspects. A cultural approach entails modeling cognitive agents who are not only capable of representing knowledge but also able to generate meanings through their experiential activities. We offer a meta-language approach allowing dynamic meaning generation during the interactions of the agents. This framework is implemented to a social simulation model. There are four important implications of the model: First, model shows a dynamic setup where agents can generate and elaborate multiplicity of meanings. Second, it exemplifies how individual mental models can interact with each other and evolve. Third, we see that a thickly coherent cultural background is not necessary for the emergence of embedded social networks, a thin coherence such as opposition maps would be sufficient to observe their dynamic formation. Fourth, exchange of meanings through successful sense-making practices generates a social anchoring process.
