Abstract: Background GBRs are essential procedures in implant dentistry and periodontology where barrier membranes play an important role by isolating soft tissue and allowing bone to grow. Not all membranes function the same way, as they differ from their origin and structure, it is important to understand how membranes behave and differ one from others in order to achieve a predictable treatment. Material and methods A systematic search on Medline by two independent reviewers was performed for articles published until July 2017 reporting the characteristics or properties of barrier membranes. The question that preceded the search was designed according to PICO rules. Results A total of 124 articles were initially identified from electronic searching. After abstract/full-text review, 21 were included for a systematic review. According to the extracted data and article analysis, barrier membranes should fulfill the following criteria in order to success: biocompatibility, space maintaining, occlusive function, easy - handling and a bioactivation friendly property. With the development of new biomaterials and surfaces, a great advance in this area is expected. Conclusions It has been clearly described that biocompatibility is the most important requirement to take into account when choosing a membrane, but other factors such as space maintaining capacity, cell oclusiveness, easy handling and bioactivation friendly materials are the ones that will fulfill our necessities. Abstract: Background The scanner does not measure the dental surface continually. Instead, it generates a point cloud, and these points are then joined to form the scanned object. This approximation will depend on the number of points generated (resolution), which can lead to low accuracy (trueness and precision) when fewer points are obtained. The purpose of this study is to determine the resolution of four intraoral digital imaging systems and to demonstrate the relationship between accuracy and resolution of the intraoral scanner in impressions of a complete dental arch. Material and methods A master cast of the complete maxillary arch was prepared with different dental preparations. Using four digital impression systems, the cast was scanned inside of a black methacrylate box, obtaining a total of 40 digital impressions from each scanner. The resolution was obtained by dividing the number of points of each digital impression by the total surface area of the cast. Accuracy was evaluated using a three-dimensional measurement software, using the "best alignment" method of the casts with a highly faithful reference model obtained from an industrial scanner. Pearson correlation was used for statistical analysis of the data. Results Of the intraoral scanners, Omnicam is the system with the best resolution, with 79.82 points per mm2, followed by True Definition with 54.68 points per mm2, Trios with 41.21 points per mm2, and iTero with 34.20 points per mm2. However, the study found no relationship between resolution and accuracy of the study digital impression systems (P >0.05), except for Omnicam and its precision. Conclusions The resolution of the digital impression systems has no relationship with the accuracy they achieve in the impression of a complete dental arch. The study found that the Omnicam scanner is the system that obtains the best resolution, and that as the resolution increases, its precision increases. Abstract: Background The purpose of the present study was to compare the biological and the physico-chemical properties of bioceramic-based root canal sealers, calcium hydroxide-based, MTA-based and epoxy resin-based root canal sealers. Material and methods Two bioceramic-based sealers, one calcium hydroxide-based sealer, one MTA-based sealer and two epoxy resin-based sealers were tested. Results EasySeal and MTA Fillapex showed severe citotoxic activity, AH Plus and SealapexTM moderate cytotoxicity, BioRoot™ RCS and TotalFill BC Sealer were both cytocompatible. Except for TotalFill BC Sealer, all root canal sealers caused inhibition zones when tested with E. faecalis. The highest inhibition zone was observed for EasySeal, followed by AH Plus. BioRoot™ RCS, SealapexTM and MTA Fillapex showed the lowest inhibition zone. All the tested materials showed different degree of antibacterial activity by using direct contact test (DCT). The highest values were observed for BioRoot™ RCS, TotalFill BC Sealer and EasySeal, followed by MTA Fillapex and SealapexTM. Except for BioRoot RCS and TotalFill BC Sealer, all the root canal sealers fulfilled the requirements of the ISO 6876 standard, demonstrating a weight loss less than 3%. Bioroot RCS, TotalFill BC Sealer and SealapexTM exhibited high alkaline pH with an increase both for BioRoot™ RCS and TotalFill BC Sealer after 24 hours. Conclusions The new bioceramic-based sealers showed acceptable physico-chemical properties, but BioRoot™ RCS and TotalFill BC Sealer seems to be too soluble, not respecting ISO 6876 requirements. Abstract: Background: Oral lichen planus (OLP) is one of the most common dermatological diseases which are present in the oral cavity. It is a chronic autoimmune, mucocutaneous disease that affects the oral mucosa as well as the skin, genital mucosa and other sites. Objective: review the relevant information to OLP and its relationship with systemic diseases. Material and Methods: searches were carried out in the Medline/PubMed, Lilacs, Bireme, BVS, and SciELO databases by using key-words. After an initial search that provided us with 243 papers, this number was reduced to 78 from the last seven years. One of the first criteria adopted was a selective reading of the abstracts of articles for the elimination of publications that presented less information regarding the subject proposed for this work. All the selected articles were read in their entirety by all of the authors, who came to a consensus about their level of evidence. The Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN) criteria were used as the criteria of methodological validation. Results: Only 9 articles showed an evidence level of 1+, 2+, 3 or 4, as well as a recommendation level of A, B, C or D. Three of them were non-systematic reviews, one was a cohort study and only one was a controlled clinical trial. Three of the studies were case series, with respective sample sizes of 45, 171 and 633 patients. Conclusions: Several factors have been associated with OLP. Patients with OLP are carriers of a disease with systemic implications and may need the care of a multidisciplinary team. The correct diagnosis of any pathology is critical to making effective treatment and minimizes iatrogenic harm. For OLP is no different, taking into account its association with numerous systemic diseases that require special attention from health professionals. Periodic follow-up of all patients with OLP is recommended.

Abstract: Background To assist clinicians in deciding the most suitable restorative materials to be used in the crowns and abutment in implant rehabilitation. Material and methods For finite element analysis (FEA), a regular morse taper implant was created using a computer aided design software. The implant was inserted at the bone model with 3 mm of exposed threads. An anatomic prosthesis representing a first maxillary molar was modeled and cemented on the solid abutment. Considering the crown material (zirconia, chromium-cobalt, lithium disilicate and hybrid ceramic) and abutment (Titanium and zirconia), the geometries were multiplied, totaling eight groups. In order to perform the static analysis, the contacts were considered bonded and each material was assigned as isotropic. An axial load (200 N) was applied on the crown and fixation occurred on the base of the bone. Results using Von-Mises criteria and micro strain values were obtained. A sample identical to the CAD model was made for the Strain Gauge (SG) analysis; four SGs were bonded around the implant to obtain micro strain results in bone tissue. Results FEA results were 3.83% lower than SG. According to the crown material, it is possible to note that the increase of elastic modulus reduces the stress concentration in all system without difference for bone. Conclusions Crown materials with high elastic modulus are able to decrease the stress values in the abutments while concentrates the stress in its structure. Zirconia abutments tend to concentrate more stress throughout the prosthetic system and may be more susceptible to mechanical problems than titanium. Abstract: Background Sintering process is responsible for aesthetic of zirconia restoration. This study evaluated the effect of different sintering temperatures and sintered-holding times on color parameters of monolithic zirconia. Material and Methods One hundred and thirty five zirconia bar specimens (width-length-thickness = 10×20×1.5 mm) were prepared from yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystalline (Y-TZP) ceramic and randomly divided into nine groups to be sintered at different temperatures [decreasing- (SD, 1350°C), regular- (SR, 1450°C), and increasing- (SI, 1550°C) sintering temperature] and different sintered-holding times [shortening- (HS, 60 min), regular- (HR, 120 min), and prolonged- (HP, 180 min) sintered-holding time]. Color appearance (ΔE), translucency parameter (TP), contrast ratio (CR), and opalescence parameter (OP) were determined with spectrophotometer. An analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's multiple comparisons were used to determine for statistically significant difference of color parameters (α=0.05). Crystal sizes were microscopically examined using scanning electron microscope (SEM), and phase composition of zirconia was determined using X-ray diffraction (XRD). Results The mean±sd for ΔE, TP, CR, OP were 82.28±1.27, 1.4±0.13, 0.982±0.004, 1.25±0.15 for SDHS, 78.38±0.74, 2.16±0.10, 0.967±0.005, 1.90±0.11 for SDHR, 74.43±0.91, 2.24±0.10, 0.964±0.004, 1.94±0.09 for SDHP, 76.31±1.22, 3.03±0.10, 0.945±0.003, 2,50±0.09 for SRHS, 74.51±1.27, 3.19±0.17, 0.942±0.003, 2.65±0.16 for SRHR, 73.94±0.49, 3.42±0.10, 0.937±0.003, 2,83±0.09 for SRHP, 76.30±0.43, 3.16±0.09, 0.937±0.002, 2.48±0.09 for SIHS 76.73±1.15, 3.05±0.20, 0.939±0.005, 2.38±0.17 for SIHR, and 75.32±1.37, 2.95±0.18, 0.942±0.006, 2.33±0.15 for SIHP. The ΔE, TP, CR, and OP were significantly affected by altering sintering temperatures and holding times (p<0.05). Increasing sintering temperature and extending sintering time significantly improved color appearance, translucency, contrast, and opalescence of Y-TZP (p<0.05) as evidenced by enlarging grain size and increasing t→m phase shift. Conclusions Raising sintering temperature and prolonging sintering time lead to better color appearance, translucency, contrast and opalescence of nano-sized monolithic Y-TZP, and are suggested for sintering process. Abstract: Background Epidemiological studies of non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) are being conducted in all geographical regions, which is completely justified, considering the high frequency of these lesions and possible consequences. Data obtained from such studies are of great importance because, beside describing the extent and degree of lesions, they can also point to specific etiological factors. The purpose of this study was to analyze the frequency and distribution of NCCLs among the patients of Faculty of Dentistry in Pancevo, Serbia, and to investigate the impact of certain etiological factors on the frequency of NCCLs. Material and methods The study included 394 patients, who were clinically examined for the presence of NCCLs and interviewed about potential etiological factors using specially designed questionnaire. Saliva samples were analyzed for 30 patients with multiple NCCLs (≥3) and 30 patients without signs of cervical lesions and restorations. Subject - level logistic regression was used to analyze the association of potential etiological factors and presence of NCCLs and Wilcoxon test for the quantity and quality of saliva. Results NCCLs were diagnosed at 68.5% from total number of respondents, 15% from all present teeth were affected. The highest prevalence was recorded on premolars. Presence of lesions significantly increased with age. Frequent consumption of citrus fruit was associated with the presence of NCCLs. Significantly lower frequency of NCCLs was recorded among subjects who frequently chew gums. Significantly lower pH values of unstimulated and stimulated saliva were recorded in the group of patients with multiple NCCLs compared to control group. Conclusions This study showed high frequency of NCCLs among subjects of different age. Premolars were the most frequently affected. Age, frequent consumption of citrus fruit and lower salivary pH value were associated with an increased occurrence of NCCLs. Chewing gums habit was associated with an decreased occurrence of NCCLs. Abstract: Background Hyoid bone plays a significant role in physiological functions of craniofacial region and it's position adapts to changes of the head. The purpose of this study was to determine the position of the hyoid bone among subjects with class I, class II and class III skeletal patterns and evaluate the gender differences. Material and Methods One hundred and ten lateral cephalograms (59 females and 51 males) from different skeletal patterns (class I, II and III) were selected. The skeletal patterns were determined according to ANB angle. Using MicroDicom software, different linear and angular measurements (6 variables) was carried out to determine the position of hyoid bone. Intraclass correlation coefficient was used to verify reliability. Descriptive statistics of the variables were calculated and analyzed using two-way ANOVA and Bonferroni statistical methods. Results The mean distance from the hyoid bone (H) to mandibular plane (MP), to palatal plane (PP), as well as to a third cervical vertebra (C3) was more in males than females (p=0.023, p<0.001, p<0.001 respectively). The mean H to PP distance was significantly more in skeletal class I compared to class III (P=0.01). The mean H to C3 distance was significantly more in skeletal class I compared to class II (P=0.008). The mean angle between H-MP and H-PP did not show any statistical difference among three skeletal classes (p=0.102, P=0.213) and among male and female groups (P=0.172, P=0.904). Conclusions The hyoid bone is positioned more superior and posterior in females than males and its location differs among different skeletal classes. It is placed more posterior in skeletal class II patterns and more inferior and anterior in skeletal class I patterns. Material and Methods One hundred and thirty five zirconia bar specimens (width-length-thickness = 10×20×1.5 mm) were prepared from yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystalline (Y-TZP) ceramic and randomly divided into nine groups to be sintered at different temperatures [decreasing- (SD, 1350°C), regular- (SR, 1450°C), and increasing- (SI, 1550°C) sintering temperature] and different sintered-holding times [shortening- (HS, 60 min), regular- (HR, 120 min), and prolonged- (HP, 180 min) sintered-holding time]. Flexural strength was determined using three-point bending test in a universal testing machine at 1 mm/min crosshead speed. An analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's multiple comparisons were used to determine for statistically significant difference of flexural strength (α=0.05). Weibull analysis was applied for survival probability, Weibull modulus (m), and characteristics strength (σo) of the flexural strength. The crystal sizes were microscopically examined using scanning electron microscope (SEM). The phase composition of zirconia was determined using X-ray diffraction (XRD). Results The mean±sd (MPa), m, and σo of flexural strength were 1080.25±217.19, 5.54, and 1167.53 for SDHS, 1243.41±233.17, 5.19, and 1352.30 for SDHR, 1298.92±235.68, 6.24, and 1394.79 for SDHP, 1303.34±171.87, 8.40, and 1377.90 for SRHS, 1331.73±278.84, 5.31, and 1444.50 for SRHR, 1348.13±283.35, 5.32, and 1460.68 for SRHP, 1458.45±289.19, 4.51, and 1604.41 for SIHS 1581.34±190.56, 8.20, and 1675.21 for SIHR and, 1604.10±139.52, 12.57, and 1667.90 for SIHP. The flexural strength was significantly affected by altering sintering temperatures and holding times (p<0.05). Enlarging grain size and increasing t→m phase shifting related with raising temperatures and times. Conclusions Increasing sintering temperature and prolonged sintered-holding time lead to enhancing flexural strength of translucency monolithic zirconia, and are suggested for sintering process to achieve durable restoration. Abstract: Background The aims of the study were measuring the light intensity of light curing units used in Qazvin's dental offices, determining the relationship between the clinical age of these units and their light intensity, and identifying the reasons for repairing them. Material and Methods In this cross-sectional study, the output intensity of 95 light curing devices was evaluated using a radiometer. The average output intensity was divided up into four categories (less than 200, 200-299, 300-500, and more than 500 mW/cm2). In addition, a questionnaire was designed to obtain information mainly about the type, clinical age, and frequency of maintenance of the units and the reasons for fixing them. Data were analyzed using Kolmogorov-Smirnov, chi-squared, and t-tests (p< 0.05) on SPSS 24. Results A total of 95 light curing units were examined, with 61 (64.2%) of them being of the LED type and 34 (35.8%) of the QTH type. While average light intensity in LED units was significantly higher than in QTH devices, the two device types were not significantly different regarding desirable light intensity (i.e., ≥ 300 mw/cm2). A negative correlation was observed between clinical age and light intensity. In addition, bulb replacement in QTH devices was over three times as much as in LED units. Also, repairing QTHs was more than twice as much frequent as fixing LEDs. The most common reason for repair was the breakage of the tip of the device. Conclusions The light intensity of LED units is significantly higher than that of QTH devices, and the frequency of repairing in QTHs was significantly more than in LEDs. Furthermore, light intensity decreases with aging, and dentists should regularly monitor the conditions of light units. Abstract: Background In the present study, the antimicrobial properties of a new ozonized olive oil (O-zone gel) against oral and periodontal pathogens will be evaluated and compared with that of common CHX-based agents. Material and methods O-zone gel was compared with two agents based on chlorhexidine digluconate (CHX): Corsodyl Dental Gel and Plak Gel. A. actinomycetemcomitans, P. intermedia and S. mutans, were selected and the antibacterial capability of the compounds was tested by using direct contact agar diffusion test (DCT) and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) evaluations. Differences between specific means were analyzed by a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). Group means were compared using a one-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (P Results O-zone gel reported inhibition zones which correspond to 33% and 43% of that achieved by the CHX agents. No inhibition of bacterial growth (MIC) on the Gram-positive strain by using O-zone gel was found and no antimicrobial effect (MBC) was observed by using O-zone gel on both Gram-negative and -positive strains. Conclusions The new ozonated oil was a relatively moderate antiseptic. Gram-negative bacteria proved to be more sensitive to ozonized olive oil than Gram-positive ones. The ozonized olive oil demonstrated a lower antibacterial activity if compared to the CHX-based agents tested. Abstract: Background The objective of this study was to assess the incidence, severity and orthodontic treatment difficulty of impacted maxillary canines in Saudi population. Material and methods This retrospective study included an investigation of panoramic radiographs for patients attended College of Dentistry, Jazan University, Saudi Arabia. The incidence of canine impaction and orthodontic treatment difficulty index of maxillary canine impaction was assessed based on; (1) patient age, (2) vertical position, (3) buccolingual position, (4) horizontal position, (5) incisors alignment, (6) canine space, (7) midline coincidence, (8) rotation of impacted tooth. Statistical analyses were calculated by independent Chi-Square test. A P value of less than 0.05 was considered significant. Results Canine impaction was found in (1.9%) of the population. Bilateral canine impaction was present in 22.3% of the patient with impacted canines. Ninety two percent had impacted maxillary canines only while 7.5% had impacted maxillary canines with other impacted teeth. The ratio of maxillary to mandibular impaction was about 10:1. Females (69.4%) had more impacted canines than males (30.6%) with no significant sex predilection. Orthodontic treatment difficulty index was statistically significant (P ≤0.05) in males more than females. Males revealed statistically significant (P ≤0.05) difficulty regarding canine angulation and the vertical position while females showed significant difficulty regarding dental midline and incisors irregularity or crowding of incisor segment. Conclusions Prevalence of maxillary canine impaction in Jazan is within the range of impacted canine in other populations. Females showed more canine impactions than males while the orthodontic treatment difficulty index is more in males than females. Abstract: Mucormycosis is a rare, fulminant, rapidly spreading fungal infection, which usually affects patient with underlying immune deficiency. If not managed promptly, the disease is characterized by progressive necrosis and is often fatal. A review of English literature shows that only fourteen cases of mucormycosis have been reported after tooth extraction. This paper highlights two cases of mucormycosis subsequent to tooth extraction in healthy adult patients. This first patient presented with an oroantral fistula and extensive maxillary necrosis. Whereas the second case was localized and presented as non-healing extraction socket with alveolar necrosis. This adds two more cases of this rare and serious complication of tooth extraction, to the present literature. Key words:Fungal, infection, zygomycosis, exodontia, complication, jaw, necrosis.

Abstract: Background: This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of two different protocols of wearing vacuum-formed retainers (VFRs) with the standard protocol of wearing Hawley retainer in maintaining the results of orthodontic treatment. Material and Methods: This single-blind randomized clinical trial consisted of 90 patients who finished orthodontic treatment at the Department of Orthodontics of Mashhad Dental School, and required removable retainers. The participants were randomly divided into 3 groups and received the following treatments. Group 1: Hawley retainers (4 months full-time and then night-only); group 2: VFR4M (4 months full-time and then night-only); group 3: VFR1W (1 week full-time and then night-only). The study models were prepared after debond and at 4 and 8 months later, and intercanine width, intermolar width, arch length and the Little's irregularity index were compared between groups. Results: No significant differences were found in intercanine and intermolar widths between groups (P > 05). Upper arch length was significantly lower in Hawley group than the two VFR groups (p < 0.05), but lower arch length values were comparable. Upper irregularity index was significantly lower in two VFR groups compared to Hawley group (p < 0.05), whereas in the lower jaw, only VFR4M group showed significantly lower crowding than Hawley group (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Both retention regimens of VFRs were more effective than Hawley retainer in maintaining arch length and tooth alignment in the upper arch. For better incisor alignment in the lower jaw, the patients should be advocated to wear VFR 4 months full-time and then at night instead of wearing Hawley retainer. © Medicina Oral S. L.

Abstract: Background Every year, millions of people are diagnosed with Diabetes mellitus (DM) and the number of new and undiagnosed cases continue to rise Diagnosis of diabetes is usually performed by blood glucose analysis after fasting for a certain period However, this method uses an invasive technique that can cause discomfort and even trauma to some patients which could eventually lead to behavioral changes such as avoidance of healthcare and laboratory testing Studies that explore the diagnostic value of salivary glucose are promising due to the non-invasiveness of the test procedures and its potential correlation with blood results Material and Methods The study conducted aimed to determine if salivary glucose can be utilized as an alternative to blood glucose in the screening, diagnosis, and monitoring of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) A total of 75 participants were recruited and equally divided into 3 groups (normal fasting glucose, impaired fasting glucose, and provisional DM) based on their fasting blood glucose (FBG) level Blood and unstimulated saliva were collected from each participant and were subjected to glucose analysis using the routine glucose oxidase-peroxidase method Results Using Pearson's correlation and linear regression, a high degree and significant correlation was observed between blood and salivary glucose (r = 0715, p<0001) Further analysis showed that salivary glucose is 885% sensitive and 615% specific with a positive predictive value of 458%, and a negative predictive value of 971% Conclusions Salivary glucose is comparable to blood glucose in diagnosing and monitoring T2DM and is considered more advantageous than blood due to its non-invasive nature Key words:Saliva, glucose, non-invasive, diabetes

Abstract: Background Tooth bleaching is a popular aesthetic treatment to modify the color of teeth. Despite the extensive literature concerning the subject, there is still no consensus regarding the application mode of the different bleaching agents and their effect on enamel. Therefore, this study evaluated the influence of different bleaching protocols on whitening efficiency and enamel superficial hardness. Material and methods Bovine enamel fragments were embedded in acrylic resin and wet-sanded to obtain a flat buccal surface. The specimens were then randomly divided into 6 groups (n=10), based on the bleaching material [HP Maxx 35% (35% hydrogen peroxide), HP Blue 35% (35% hydrogen peroxide + Ca) and Whiteness Perfect 10% (10% carbamide peroxide)] and application mode (3 applications of 15 min, 1 application of 45 min, 1 application of 1h30 or 1 application of 3h30). The color and superficial hardness were assessed before and after bleaching. The color was assessed by means of a digital spectrophotometer, using CIELab parameters. Vickers hardness was determined using a load of 200g for 10s. Data were statistically analyzed by one-way ANOVA with repeated measures and Tukey's test (α = 0.05). Results Concerning the color alteration, the groups were similar to each other, except for at-home bleaching protocols, which were statistically different from each other. Similarly, there was a reduction in hardness values comparing the initial and final periods, with lowest final hardness for the at-home bleaching protocol group applied for 3h30. Conclusions It can be concluded that the bleaching protocols influenced the final color and enamel surface hardness, evidencing that lower gel concentrations applied for longer periods promoted greater variation in color and lower final hardness. Abstract: Background This study aimed to compare the pharyngeal airway volume in class I,II and III skeletal malocclusion patients using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). Material and Methods This retrospective, cross sectional study was conducted on lateral cephalograms of 71 patients derived from their CBCT scans. Using the ANB angle, the patients were divided into class I,II and III malocclusion. Two observers used Dolphin 3D software to calculate the pharyngeal airway volume, airway area, minimum axial area, minimum area location, airway length and morphology. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis test, Tukey's test, Spearman's correlation coefficient and multiple regression analysis. Results The three skeletal classes were significantly different in airway volume, minimum axial area, mean airway area and airway morphology (P<0.05). Significant differences were found in airway volume and mean airway area between class II and III patients (P<0.05). The minimum axial area and airway morphology in class III patients were greater than those in class I and II patients (P<0.05). Every one unit increase in the ANB angle decreased the airway volume by 0.261 units. The effect of ANB angle on airway volume was statistically significant and it was shown that one unit increase in the angle decreased the airway volume by 453.509 units. Conclusions A significant correlation exists between the skeletal facial pattern and upper airway dimensions. In our study, the total airway volume and the mean airway area of class III patients were larger than those in class II patients. Abstract: Background This study aimed to investigate the effects of a minimally invasive, flapless procedure to enhance tooth movement in both jaws and to determine whether this triggers the acceleration when repeated monthly. Material and methods The sample consisted of thirty-two individuals whose orthodontic treatment required canine retraction. They were divided into an experimental group and control group. Osteopunctures were performed using orthodontic mini-screws at the distal aspects of the canine teeth at the beginning and on the fourth week of distalization in the experimental group. The control group was treated with conventional mechanics. All canines were retracted. The rates of canine distalization, rotation, and tipping were measured on the first, fourth, and eighth weeks of distalization. First molar anchorage loss was also measured. Intergroup and intragroup analyses were performed. Results Flapless osteopuncture-facilitated tooth movement resulted in greater canine distalization and reduced molar movement in the maxilla in the experimental than in the control group during the first month of distalization. In addition, the extent of upper canine movement was significantly higher in the experimental group in the first month than in the second. No differences in canine and molar movement in the mandible were observed between the two groups. Conclusions OP, as applied in this study, is an effective method for increasing the rate of tooth movement in the maxilla. Repeating the procedure monthly does not appear to show a major advance of tooth movement. Key words:Accelerated tooth movement, flapless osteopuncture.

Abstract: Background Incompatible coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) is supposed to be a reason for chipping of ceramic veneered zirconia. This study evaluates the effect of veneering ceramic at varied CTE on bond strength to zirconia. Material and Methods Zirconia disks (Z, O 10 mm, 1.0 mm thickness) were prepared from Y-TZP (Cercon®) and sintered at 1350°C for 6 hours. All zirconia disks were veneered with ceramics ((O 7.0 mm, 1.5 mm thickness) with varied CTE including VITADur® alpha (VDα), VITAVM®7 (VM7), VITAVM®9 (VM9), Cercon® ceramkiss (CCK), IPSe.max® ceram (IeC), and IPS dSIGN® (IdS) (n=15). The specimens were thermo-cycled (5-55 °C, 500 cycles) prior to determine the shear bond strength on a universal testing machine. The veneering ceramic and zirconia rods (O 4 mm, 30 mm length) were prepared for CTE evaluation. ANOVA and Tukey's multiple comparisons were used to determine the statistically significant difference (α=0.05). Weibull analysis was applied for survival probability, Weibull modulus (m), and characteristics strength (σo) of the shear bond. The interfaces were microscopically examined. The phase transformation of zirconia was determined using X ray diffraction. Results The mean±sd (MPa), m, and σo of bond strength were 20.45±2.32, 9.25, and 21.53 for Z-VDα, 19.47±4.53, 4.66, and 20.31 for Z-VM7, 21.05±3.96, 5.61, and 21.88 for Z-IeC, 25.85±2.74, 9.93, and 27.15 for Z-VM9, 25.82±4.39, 6.27, and 27.06 for Z-CCK, and 2.96±0.73, 4.11, and 3.28 for Z-IdS. The CTE (×10-6/°C) were 10.80, 7.83, 7.87, 9.86, 9.93, 10.03, and 12.95 for Z, VDα, VM7, IeC, VM9, CCK, and IdS. The bond strength was significantly affected by the CTE difference (p<0.05). The t→m phase transformation related with the CTE difference. Conclusions The CTE's differences induced stress that affected the bond strength. CTE's compatibility of veneering ceramic to zirconia is crucial for enhancing the bond strength. The CTE difference approximately 0.77-0.87×10-6/°C was recommended. Abstract: Background Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis is a chronic inflammatory immune mediated condition associated with single or multiple, painful recurring ulcers of the oral mucosa. Psychological stress is a common trigger factor identified for the onset and progression of this condition. The study aimed to evaluate stress, anxiety and depression using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression scale and stress by the General Health Questionnaire in subjects with Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis (RAS). Material and Methods The study evaluated subjects with a history of Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis and compared their psychological stress, anxiety and depression alteration to normal subjects. Seventy-five study subjects were divided into three groups; test group 1 (25 subjects) presenting with RAS, test group 2 (25 subjects) with a history of RAS but without oral ulcers, and 25 normal subjects with no history of RAS formed the control group. Chi square and student t test was used to determine the relationship between psychological variables and recurrent aphthous ulcers. Results Comparison of stress, Anxiety and Depression between test group 1 and control group, test group 2 and control group was not found to be statistically significant (p< 0.05). Hence, differences were evident when individual questions were analyzed for stress anxiety and depression. Stress and depression were more prevalent in females, students and patients with a history of RAS. Conclusions Higher depression and stress levels were evident in subjects with a history of RAS. Psychological stress is a utmost trigger factor for the initiation of recurrent ulcers. Overall, test group patients had a more psychological impact on the quality of life than the control group. Abstract: Background Evaluation of dental treatment is performed by observing dental periapical radiography to obtain information of filling's condition, pulp tissue, remain dentin thickness, periodontal ligament, and lamina dura. Nevertheless, the radiographic image used often has low quality due to the level of x-ray radiation made low purposely in order to prevent health problem and limited tools capability. This low quality of the radiographic image, for examples, low image contrast, less brightness, and noise existence cause periapical radiography evaluation hard to be performed. This study aims to improve dental radiographic image quality for assisting pulp capping treatment evaluation. Material and methods The research methodology consists of three main stages, i.e. data collection, image enhancement method production, and result validation. Radiographic image data collection in The Dental Hospital UMY. Image enhancement method has been conducted by comparing several methods: contourlet transform (CT), wavelet transform, contrast stretching (CS), and contrast limited adaptive histogram equalization (CLAHE) to reduce noise, to optimize image contrast, and to enhance image brightness. Results The result of this study is according to mean square error (MSE) and peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) statistics evaluation, it obtains that the highest scores of MSE and PSNR in row gained from CT method totaled 5.441453 and 40.53652, followed by CLAHE method with the scores are 10.66326 and 38.00736, CS method whose scores are 12.39881 and 39.18518, and the last is wavelet method with the scores are 15.41569 and 36.25343. Conclusions Nonetheless, MSE and PSNR scores are not enough merely to give a recommendation of any suitable methods for improving contrast, therefore, it needs another success parameter coming from the dentist. Abstract: Background To establish the correlation between enamel roughness and color change of tooth. Material and methods Enamel/dentin blocks (5 x 5 x 3.2 mm) were serially ground with the following abrasive paper: 1200-grit, 800-grit, and 600-grit SiC papers. In the paired model, the analyses of color (L*, a*, b*, ΔE) and roughness (Ra) were performed among the sandpaper exposure. The data were subjected to ANOVA using models for repeated measures followed by the Tukey test. The Pearson correlation test was used to determine whether there was a relationship between Ra values and color results (α = 0.05). Results The L* values decreased in accordance with the increase of Ra, with statistical difference between all the times (p 0.05). Conclusions The alteration of enamel roughness acted on the lightness and the green-red axis of tooth color. Abstract: Background Dry socket or alveolar osteitis is a delayed healing of alveolar bone after exodontia causing moderate to severe pain 2-4 days after extraction of teeth. Antibacterial agents such as antibiotics and chlorhexidine have been previously proved to prevent or reduce the incidence of dry socket. Betadine is a mixture of iodine and povidone which has bactericidal, antifungal and antiviral effects. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of preoperative povidone iodine 1% mouthwash before surgical extraction of impacted mandibular third molar, however age, gender and oral hygiene were also considered. Material and methods 189 patients who needed surgical extraction of Pell and Gregory class A and B mandibular third molars were included in this study. The patients who were not willing to participate in the study, took, women who took oral contraceptives or were in the first 22 days of menstrual cycle were excluded. Patients were randomly assigned to control or test group. 97 patients in the test group took preoperative povidone iodine 1% mouthwash and 92 patients in the control group didn't take any antibiotic or mouthwash. Patients were examined in days 3 and 7 postoperatively for incidence of alveolar osteitis. Results Chi-square test didn't show any significant relation between dry socket incidence and gender (p value: 0.848) and Oral hygiene (p value: 0.866). However, it revealed a significant relation between age and dry socket incidence (p value: 0.003) and patients older than 30 were reported to have higher incidence of dry socket. Independent T-Test showed a significant difference between the test and control group in incidence of dry socket (p value: 0.036). Conclusions Based on the results of this study povidone iodine 1% mouthwash can decrease dry socket incidence also as the age increases, the incidence of dry socket becomes higher. Abstract: Background The objective of this study was to analyse three dimensionally the reliability and correlation of angular and linear measurements in assessment of anteroposterior skeletal discrepancy. Material and Methods In this retrospective cross sectional study, a sample of 213 subjects were three-dimensionally analysed from cone-beam computed tomography scans. The sample was divided according to three dimensional measurement of anteroposterior relation (ANB angle) into three groups (skeletal Class I, Class II and Class III). The anterior-posterior cephalometric indicators were measured on volumetric images using Anatomage software (InVivo5.2). These measurements included three angular and seven linear measurements. Cross tabulations were performed to correlate the ANB angle with each method. Intra-class Correlation Coefficient (ICC) test was applied for the difference between the two reliability measurements. P value of < 0.05 was considered significant. Results There was a statistically significant (P<0.05) agreement between all methods used with variability in assessment of different anteroposterior relations. The highest correlation was between ANB and DSOJ (0.913), strong correlation with AB/FH, AB/SN/, MM bisector, AB/PP, Wits appraisal (0.896, 0.890, 0.878, 0.867,and 0.858, respectively), moderate with AD/SN and Beta angle (0.787 and 0.760), and weak correlation with corrected ANB angle (0.550). Conclusions Conjunctive usage of ANB angle with DSOJ, AB/FH, AB/SN/, MM bisector, AB/PP and Wits appraisal in 3D cephalometric analysis provide a more reliable and valid indicator of the skeletal anteroposterior relationship. Clinical relevance: Most of orthodontic literature depends on single method (ANB) with its drawbacks in assessment of skeletal discrepancy which is a cardinal factors for proper treatment planning, this study assessed three dimensionally the degree of correlation between all available methods to make clinical judgement more accurate based on more than one method of assessment. Abstract: Background Precision of implant impressions is a prerequisite for long-term success of implant supported prostheses. Impression materials and impression techniques are two important factors that impression precision relies on. Material and Methods A model of edentulous maxilla containing four implants inserted by All-on-4 guide was constructed. Seventy two impressions using polyether (PE), polyvinyl siloxane (PVS), and vinyl siloxanether (VSE) materials with direct and indirect techniques were made (n=12). Coordinates of implants in casts were measured using coordinate measuring machine (CMM). Data were analyzed with ANOVA; t-test and Tukey test were used for post hoc. Results With two-way ANOVA, mean values of linear displacements of implants were significantly different among materials and techniques. One-way ANOVA and Tukey showed significant difference between PE and VSE (P=0.019), PE and PVS (P=0.002) in direct technique, and between PVS and PE (P<0.001), PVS and VSE (P<0.001) in indirect technique. One-way ANOVA and t-test showed significant difference between the two techniques in PVS groups (P<0.001) and in PE groups (P=0.02). Two-way ANOVA showed mean values of rotational displacement of implants were significantly different among materials. One-way ANOVA and Tukey test showed significant difference between PVS and PE (P=0.001) and between PVS and VSE (P=0.012) in indirect groups. Conclusions On the basis of the results, when deciding on the material to make an impression of implants, PE is recommended for direct technique while PE and VSE are recommended for indirect technique. Recommended technique for VSE is either direct or indirect; and for PE and PVS is direct. Abstract: BACKGROUND: Assure Plus is a recently introduced universal adhesive with the ability to bond to various restorations. This study compared the shear bond strength of brackets bonded to two types of ceramics using conventional bonding agent and Assure Plus. Surface damage caused by debonding was also evaluated. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this in vitro study, 40 feldspathic and lithium disilicate ceramic discs were sandblasted, etched with 9.6% hydrofluoric acid and divided into two groups. In group 1, silane was applied and air-dried followed by application of Transbond XT primer, which was light-cured. In group 2, Assure Plus was applied and air-dried. In both groups, maxillary central incisor brackets were bonded. After incubation in distilled water at 37°C for 24 hours and 2000 thermal cycles, bond strength was measured using a universal testing machine, and the adhesive remnant index (ARI) and failure modes were determined. ANOVA and LSD tests were used to compare bond strength values; chi-squared test was used to compare ARI scores. RESULTS: Bracket bond to lithium disilicate by Assure Plus was significantly stronger than that to Feldspathic porcelain (P=0.041). Only in the Assure Plus/lithium disilicate group did some adhesive remain on the surface following debonding (40% of samples, P<0.05). Cohesive porcelain fracture had the lowest frequency in the lithium disilicate/Assure Plus group. CONCLUSIONS: Assure Plus provided high bond strength between ceramic and brackets and minimized damage to lithium disilicate ceramic during debonding. Assure Plus is recommended for use in orthodontic treatment of adults with ceramic restorations. Key words:Adhesives, ceramics, dental bonding, shear bond strength.

Abstract: Background The present systematic review analyzed the current literature to investigate whether rapid maxillary expansion (RME) causes radicular resorption, assessed by cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Material and methods Eighteen electronic databases and reference lists of studies were searched up to November 2017. Grey literature was also screened. To be included, articles must be human studies on growing subjects with transversal maxillary deficiency treated with maxillary expansion protocol and with 3-D radiographic assessment of radicular volume by CBCT images. Two authors independently performed study selection, data extraction, and risk of bias assessment. Study characteristics (study design, sample size, age, sex, skeletal maturity, type of appliance, daily activation, teeth evaluated, CBCT settings), and study outcomes (radicular volume loss) were reported according to the PRISMA statement. Results Only 3 articles were considered eligible and an individual analysis of the selected articles was undertaken. The risk of bias assessment revealed low methodological quality for all the studies included. In all the considered studies, significant radicular volume loss was observed in posterior teeth, following RME. When reported in percentage, the radicular volumetric loss was similar between anchored (first molars and first premolars) and unanchored teeth (second premolars). Conclusions A preliminary evaluation of the patient-related risk factors for RR is warmly advisable when administering RME. Abstract: Background The aim of this study was to assess the impact of diet and behavioural risk factors on caries appearance, and on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) among Portuguese adolescents. Material and methods An epidemiological study conducted on 782 adolescents between 11-17 years, from randomly selected public schools of the 3rd cycle of basic education. All participants were asked for self-perceived general status health, about tooth-brushing habits and about the using of toothpaste with fluoride and a Food Frequency Questionnaire. The DMFT index (decayed, missing and filled teeth) was evaluated according to WHO criteria. To evaluate the OHRQoL, the 49-items Oral Health Impact Profile questionnaire (OHIP-49) was applied. Results Consumption more than once a week of tea with sugar, milk with sugar and biscuits were significantly associated with DMFT index. Lower levels in OHRQoL was reported by students who consumed frequently (more than once a week) fast food, chocolate flakes and those who brushed their teeth once a day or less frequently instead of 2-3 times a day. Conclusions Frequency of consumption of sweetened/fast food was a significant factor associated with caries and quality of life. Abstract: Background This study investigated the antibacterial efficacy against Streptococcus mutans and fluoride release of a conventional glass ionomer (GI) contained natural and chemical agents. Material and methods Two hundred and ten GI specimens were divided into ten groups (n=21) according to the concentrations of the additives as; Propolis extract containing GI (Groups 1, 2, 3) with concentrations of 0.25%, 0.75% and 1.25% respectively, Miswak extract containing GI (Groups 4, 5, 6) and Chlorhexidine containing GI (Groups 7, 8, 9) with the same concentrations. The prepared specimens were subjected to antimicrobial activity by well diffusion, bacterial adherence, and fluoride release (from 2 to 72 hours) assessments. Results A higher statistically significant antibacterial activity was found in (Groups 2, 3) compared to (Groups 8, 9), while (Groups 1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 10) no antibacterial efficacy was reported. For (Groups 2, 3) had a higher statistically significant anti-adherence effect compared to the other tested groups. Enhanced ascending increase in fluoride release was observed for (Groups 3, 4) compared to (GI). Conclusions The increased concentration of propolis extract had a synergistic effect on the antimicrobial activity of the tested GI. Additive concentrations of 0.25% Miswak and 1.25% propolis could enhance the fluoride-releasing ability of the tested GI. Key words:Propolis, miswak, chlorhexidine, glass ionomer, fluoride.

Abstract: Background In the last decade, multiple studies have been published that analyze the relationship between the risk of experiencing biological complications with implants and the presence of certain types of genetic polymorphisms. In the present report, we analyze the controversies that have arisen from this important area of investigation and synthesize the most prominent aspects of knowledge related to this possible etiopathogenic relationship. Material and methods For this review, the biomedical databases PubMed-Medline, SciELO, and DOAJ were used. Different search strategies were employed, from which 298 articles initially emerged. After refinement of the search, 55 articles published between 2002 and 2018 were finally selected based on relevance. Results In certain population groups, there is evidence to support that about a dozen polymorphisms could in some way be related to biological complications in implantology. Indeed, the results may vary according to the ethnic origin of the population studied. Most of the published investigations are initial studies reporting small sample sizes and utilizing different study group homogenization methods. We are still at a preliminary stage of our understanding and development with regard to these types of biomarkers. The interesting results identified indicate that new investigations will be necessary to eliminate the biases observed in some studies and to homogenize the research groups. In order to clarify the controversies surrounding the current knowledge in this field, we believe that it will be necessary to employ larger study groups and search for possible synergistic effects between different polymorphisms.
