Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors conducted a geochemical study of Early Paleozoic metasedimentary rocks to better constrain their provenance and tectonic environment, and found that these rocks have relatively low CIA values (49 to 79), with ICV values (0.73-1.36) higher than that of post-Archean Australian average shale (PAAS), suggesting that they experienced relatively weak chemical weathering and were mainly derived from an immature source.

179 citations

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, petrographical, mineralogical, geochemical and stable isotope analyses were conducted on an actively forming Egerszalok Travertine mound to determine the factors that govern carbonate precipitation and thus influence the use of travertines in paleoclimate reconstruction.

106 citations

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, detailed microfacies and paleoenvironmental analyses were conducted through the Early Triassic interval of the outer platform ammonoid-rich series of the Nanpanjiang Basin (Luolou Formation, Guangxi Province, South China).

103 citations

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, three different types of early diagenetic dolomites and two types of dedolomite were observed, each is defined by a distinct petrographic/isotopic signature and a distinct spatial distribution pattern.

101 citations

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the authors used a correlation of the whole-rock δ13C record with the well-dated record from SE France to infer the age of the northern Tethyan Urgonian platform in unprecedented detail and suggest stepwise platform demise, with each drowning phase documented by erosion and phosphogenesis.

95 citations

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, a detailed investigation of middle-upper Quaternary deposits from central Po Plain was carried out on the basis of integrated sedimentological and pollen analyses of a 114 m-long core, and stratigraphic correlations of well data.

93 citations

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors identify a suite of deltaic and non-deltaic depositional environments occupying semi-confined marine embayments along the southern-western basin margin.

92 citations

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, detrital zircon grains from the Neoproterozoic to lower Palaeozoic Volta basin, Ghana, and from sandstones in the adjoining thrust sheets belonging to the Pan-African Dahomeyide belt were derived from the Grenvillian orogenic belts, perhaps those that fringe the Amazonian craton.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: Facies, depositional model and stratigraphic architecture of Pleistocene giant Gilbert-type fan deltas are presented, based on outcrop data from the Derveni-Akrata region along the southern coast of the Gulf of Corinth, Greece.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, field observations and sediment samples at a coastal-plain setting in southeastern Sri Lanka were used to document the erosional and depositional impacts of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami and to interpret the hydrodynamic processes that produced an extensive sand-sheet deposit.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: A review of the available literature and their data reveal two peaks in Microcodium abundance; the Moscovian-early Permian and the latest Cretaceous-Paleogene as discussed by the authors.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, a simple autocorrelation algorithm for determining grain size from digital images of sediment is proposed, advancing the applicability of a suite of sedimentary look-up-catalogue approaches originated by Rubin [Rubin, D.M., 2004.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the Eocene Battfjellet Formation (Clinoform 17) is considered to be a high-stand shelf-edge delta, and its relative sea-level rise has been studied.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: The Eucla Basin including the vast Nullarbor Plain lies on the margins of the Yilgarn, Musgrave and Gawler cratons in southern Australia and owes its distinctive landscape to a unique set of interactions between eustatic, climatic and tectonic processes over the last ~50-Ma as mentioned in this paper.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the authors focused on the island of Sylt, located at the German North Sea coast close to the Danish border, and combined ground-penetrating radar studies and sedimentological investigations based on shallow cores.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the early Maastrichtian part of the Marambio Group consists in ascending stratigraphic order of a) fossiliferous mudstone and sandstone of the Snow Hill Island Formation, b) glauconitic beds of the Haslum Crag Sandstone, and c) the mudstone-rich basal Lopez de Bertodano Formation (ca. 400m thick).

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: The high terrace sinter consists of vitreous and massive-mottled silica horizons, while the distal deposit and core comprise dominantly porous, indurated fragmental sinters.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: Hallsworth et al. as mentioned in this paper combined heavy mineral assemblages, garnet geochemistry and palaeocurrent directions to provide useful information on the provenance of sandstones, but when such datasets are combined the number of options on the location of possible source areas can be greatly reduced.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: The Clinton travertine dendrites are an excellent example of complex, episodic calcite crystal growth that was extensively modified by early diagenetic processes in a surface environment as mentioned in this paper.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, a study of four closely-spaced El Garia Formation reservoirs (offshore Tunisia) has identified diagenetic controls on variation in reservoir quality in the Ashtart, Didon and Zarat fields.

Journal ArticleDOI
