TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examine the relationship between the level of trust and several relevant constructs drawn from transaction cost analysis (such as asset specificity, behavioral uncertainty, and partner's opportunism) and social exchange theory (informational sharing).
Abstract: Purpose – The primary purpose of this study is to examine the relationships between the level of trust and several relevant constructs drawn from transaction cost analysis (such as asset specificity, behavioral uncertainty, and partner's opportunism) and social exchange theory (informational sharing).Design/methodology/approach – A comprehensive questionnaire based on various theories on trust and commitment was mailed in 2001 to supply chain practitioners in the Midwest region. A total of 171 valid returns were received out of 1,800 mailings (9.5 percent). A path analysis was used to estimate parameters or relationship between relevant constructs and trust, and trust with the level of commitment.Findings – A firm's trust in their supply chain partner is highly associated with both parties’ specific asset investments and social exchange theory. Information sharing has a primary impact on reducing (improving a partner's uncertainty behavior which, in turn, would improve the level of trust. Finally, the lev...

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigate supplier and customer integration strategies by comparing US and East Asian companies and find out how these strategies actually differ and affect performance of the companies, and investigate the connections between suppliers and customers integration and improved operations performance.
Abstract: Purpose – Though there is a wide acceptance of the strategic importance of integrating operations with suppliers and customers in the supply chain, many questions remain unanswered about how best to characterize supply chain strategies. Is it more important to link with suppliers, customers, or both? Similarly, little is known about the connections between supplier and customer integration and improved operations performance. This article seeks to investigate supplier and customer integration strategies by comparing US and East Asian companies. It is of paramount interest to find out how these strategies actually differ and affect performance of the companies.Design/methodology/approach – This was carried out in three phases. In the first phase, a number of operations‐management related journals were skimmed to select about 30 research articles related to supply chain concepts and practices. In the second phase, investigation efforts narrowed down to supply chain management research conducted in East Asia...

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors explore the introduction of e-procurement systems and their contribution to the management of indirect goods supply chain and what factors are critical to their implementation are only emerging.
Abstract: Purpose – Electronic support of internal supply chains for direct or production goods has been a major element during the implementation of enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems that has taken place since the late 1980s. However, supply chains to indirect material suppliers were not usually included due to low transaction volumes, low product values and low strategic importance of these goods. Dedicated information systems for streamlining indirect goods supply chains have emerged since the late 1990s and subsequently have faced a broad diffusion in practice. The concept of these e‐procurement solutions has also been described broadly in the literature. However, studies on how companies use these e‐procurement solutions and what factors are critical to their implementation are only emerging. This research aims to explore the introduction of e‐procurement systems and their contribution to the management of indirect goods supply chain.Design/methodology/approach – Chooses a two‐part qualitative approac...

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors explore SCM practices and identify practical and theoretical gaps in toy supply chains, and conclude that there are three main SCM practice for toy retailers in terms of ordering behaviours (one-off, JIT, and mixed model).
Abstract: Purpose – Innovative products usually experience highly unpredictable and variable demand. This is especially valid for the volatile and seasonal toy industry, which produces high obsolete inventory, lost sales and markdown. In such a volatile industry, what supply chain management (SCM) practices are applicable and effective? This study seeks to explore SCM practices, and identify practical and theoretical gaps in toy supply chains.Design/methodology/approach – This article includes a longitudinal and in‐depth case study during the past year in an international toy manufacturer, which includes qualitative semi‐structured interviews and questionnaire with 11 main European toy retailers.Findings – The study concludes that there are three main SCM practices for toy retailers in terms of ordering behaviours (one‐off, JIT, and mixed model), and one dominated SCM practice for toy manufacturers (traditional mass‐production or push‐models). These low‐responsive practices in the toy supply chain are not caused on...

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors deal with issues such as the size of a purchasing group, the types of benefits aimed for, and the real beneficiaries of purchasing groups, based on the literature, as well as on interviews with Canadian and US health care managers.
Abstract: Purpose – The article deals with issues such as the size of a purchasing group, the types of benefits aimed for, and the real beneficiaries of purchasing groups.Design/methodology/approach – The observations are based on the literature, as well as on interviews, mostly with Canadian and US health‐care managers.Findings – Although often associated with the public sector, purchasing groups are also an alternative considered more and more by managers of the private sector. A purchasing group increases volume consolidation, making it possible to have only one negotiation, in order to increase the purchasing group members' power vis‐a‐vis that of its suppliers. However, a purchasing group also constitutes an additional link in the supply chain and its objectives could go contrary to those of some of its members. This is why organisations considering joining a purchasing group should analyse this option strategically, in order to assess correctly the potential long‐term benefits.Originality/value – This article...

TL;DR: In this paper, the concept of value network advocacy is introduced to address the limitations of traditional information systems for supply chain management (SCM), and the implications of this term are explored.
Abstract: Purpose – To introduce a broader concept for supply‐chain management (SCM), the notion of value network advocacy.Design/methodology/approach – The historical roots and the traditional terms used to describe SCM are explored to show how their meanings have led to specific types of information systems to support SCM. The limitations of these systems are demonstrated with case studies. Then the concept of value network advocacy is introduced to address these limitations, and implications of this term are explored.Findings – The term SCM has its historical roots in the control of fulfillment activities that support the linear physical flow of goods from suppliers to manufacturers to distributors to retailers. Consequently many information systems (IS) applications that support the supply chain have a similar focus. These systems often separate supply from demand management and focus on linear information flows. Often they are implemented without reengineering business processes. A broader concept, value netwo...

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors provide five ways of simplifying the supply chain process, which will lead to more consistent quality, lower operation costs, and inherently greater responsiveness; and this will most certainly yield more satisfied customers.
Abstract: Purpose – To provide five ways of simplifying the supply chain.Design/methodology/approach – Uses the Complexity Reduction Framework to break down supply chain complexity into its component parts.Findings – Reveals that ongoing globalisation brings increased complexity to virtually every aspect of the business world, and supply chains are the latest to be affected; thus adaptability has never been more crucial. Many company failures can be traced back to an inability to adapt rapidly to changing market expectations; overly complex supply chains are not adaptable. It is best to take some of the complexity out of the supply chain.Originality/value – By simplifying the supply chain process overall performance will usually be enhanced, leading to more consistent quality, lower operation costs, and inherently greater responsiveness; and this will most certainly yield more satisfied customers.

TL;DR: In this paper, a general information sharing model in supply chains is presented and three major factors in the model are compared and analyzed based on the general model, 12 representative models are selected from the literature and their relationship and distinctions are compared.
Abstract: Purpose – Information sharing is an important component of cooperation in supply chain management. However, it has long been debated whether there is value in information sharing, how large the value is, if any, and what factors affect it. The purpose of the paper lies in investigating these three issues by comparing and analyzing 12 information models in supply chains.Design/methodology/approach – To achieve the above purpose, the paper first presents a general information‐sharing model in supply chains and characterizes three major factors in the model (objective, supply chain partnership constraint, information sharing constraint). Based on the general model, 12 representative models are selected from the literature and their relationship and distinctions are compared and analyzed.Findings – By insights from comparative analysis of these representative models, the paper concludes that information sharing in supply chains is valuable. However, the value and affecting factors are dependent on analytical ...

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors argue that the main barrier to entry in the music sector has been the ownership and protection of artistic content in the supply chain, and they focus on a review of the concepts relating to "barriers to entry" since entry into the music industry is central to the explanation of the incumbents' strategic responses.
Abstract: Purpose – Music can be copied and distributed almost without cost via the internet, while payment and distribution technologies are reducing the transaction costs of its commercial exchange. In the case of MP3 the cost of swapping music files is negligible, for both the supplier uploading the file and the receiver who is downloading the music. In light of these developments, this paper seeks to put forward the proposition that the main barrier to entry in the music sector has been the ownership and protection of artistic content in the supply chain.Design/methodology/approach – The paper focuses on a review of the concepts relating to “barriers to entry”, since entry into the music industry is central to the explanation of the incumbents’ strategic responses. The pre‐ and post‐web supply chains are also assessed from a “barrier to entry” perspective.Findings – This paper argues that the internet is destabilising the supply chain for music by challenging the pre‐web role and domination of the music industr...
