TLDR
In this paper, a set of fundamental criteria that a meaningful index of functional diversity should satisfy to reasonably behave in ecological research are proposed, and a family of measures that are most appropriate for a correct evaluation of the relations between biological diversity and ecosystem functioning is presented.

A distance-based framework for measuring functional diversity from multiple traits

TL;DR: A highly flexible distance-based framework to measure different facets of FD in multidimensional trait space from any distance or dissimilarity measure, any number of traits, and from different trait types (i.e., quantitative, semi-quantitative, and qualitative).
Journal ArticleDOI

New multidimensional functional diversity indices for a multifaceted framework in functional ecology.

TL;DR: This study suggests that decomposition of functional diversity into its three primary components provides a meaningful framework for its quantification and for the classification of existing functional diversity indices.

Functional diversity: back to basics and looking forward

TL;DR: It is suggested that non-significant results have a range of alternate explanations that do not necessarily contradict positive effects of functional diversity, and areas for development of techniques used to measure functional diversity are suggested.
Journal ArticleDOI

Functional diversity measures: an overview of their redundancy and their ability to discriminate community assembly rules

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that functional diversity indices have the potential to reveal the processes that structure biological communities and to accurately assess functional diversity and establish its relationships with ecosystem functioning and environmental constraints.

Measuring Biological Diversity

TL;DR: In this article, a measure called the effective number of species is developed from a nonparametric probability inequality and is shown to have a simple interpretation in terms of comparing linear experiments.

The Influence of Functional Diversity and Composition on Ecosystem Processes

TL;DR: Functional composition and functional diversity were the principal factors explaining plant productivity, plant percent nitrogen, plant total nitrogen, and light penetration in grassland plots.

Vive la différence: plant functional diversity matters to ecosystem processes

TL;DR: Crossfertilization between approaches based on species richness on the one hand, and on functional traits and types on the other, is a promising way of gaining mechanistic insight into the links between plant diversity and ecosystem processes and contributing to practical management for the conservation of diversity andcosystem services.
