The impact of shrimp pond effluent on water quality and phytoplankton biomass in a tropical mangrove estuary.
L.A. Trott,Daniel M. Alongi +1 more
TL;DR: Water quality and phytoplankton biomass were examined over a three-year period in a mangrove estuary receiving periodic inputs of effluent from adjacent shrimp ponds, and in two adjacent, non-impacted estuaries, in north Queensland, Australia.
Journal ArticleDOI
Photosynthesis and calcification in the articulated coralline red algae Amphiroa anceps and A. foliacea
TL;DR: At all pH values examined, the calcification rate of living plants in the dark and of dead plants is directly proportional to the CO2-3ion concentration, suggesting little metabolic involvement in calcification processes in thedark, whereas calcification in live A. foliacea in the light is influenced both by the photosynthetic rate and the CO 2-3 ion concentration in the medium.
Journal ArticleDOI
Limnetic Herbivory: Effects on Phytoplankton Populations and Primary Production
A. M. Bergquist,S. R. Carpenter +1 more
TL;DR: Overall, the stimulatory effect of nutrient regeneration by zooplankton overrode losses due to grazing, and caused net increases in phytoplankon biomass and productivity.
Journal ArticleDOI
Selection for a red tide organism: Physiological responses to the physical environment1,2
TL;DR: In this paper, positive phototaxis at a salinity interface appears to prevent the subsurface concentrations from crossing the sharp halocline, retaining the lens population in northward-flowing bottom waters.
Journal ArticleDOI
Trace metal enrichments in the Mediterranean Sea
TL;DR: A detailed map of trace metal distributions in the Alboran Sea (immediately east of the Strait of Gibraltar) reveals a metal-enriched plume with concentrations as high as copper, 3.6 nmol/kg; nickel, 2.8 nmol /kg; and cadmium, 120 pmol/ kg as discussed by the authors.
