The role of adsorption in sediment-water exchange of phosphate in North Sea continental margin sediments
TL;DR: The effect of adsorption on the sediment-water exchange of PO, was investj gated in sediments from four different types of sedimentary environments in the southern and eastern North Sea in August 1991 and February 1992 as discussed by the authors.
Journal ArticleDOI
Dimethylsulfide and Phaeocystis poucheti in the southeastern Bering Sea
TL;DR: Dimethylsulfide was determined in the water column during the spring phytoplankton bloom on the southeastern Bering Sea shelf and a very strong correlation between the cell density of the haptophyte Phaeocystis poucheti and the DMS concentration in seawater was found, which suggests that this species accounts for most of the D MS present in the study region.
Journal ArticleDOI
Atmospheric acidification of mineral aerosols: a source of bioavailable phosphorus for the oceans
Athanasios Nenes,Athanasios Nenes,Michael D. Krom,Nikos Mihalopoulos,Nikos Mihalopoulos,P. Van Cappellen,Zongbo Shi,Aikaterini Bougiatioti,Pavlos Zarmpas,Barak Herut +9 more
TL;DR: In this paper, atmospheric acidification of aerosols is a prime mechanism producing soluble phosphorus from soil-derived minerals, which is supported by the soluble compositions and reconstructed pH values for atmospheric particulate matter samples collected over a 5-yr period at Finokalia, Crete.
Journal ArticleDOI
Another look at the nitrite and chlorophyll maxima in the central North Pacific
TL;DR: A field study of the deep chlorophyll maximum and associated nitrite maximuum of the central North Pacific compared the standing crop, growth rates, and physiological characteristics of phytoplankton from the mixed layer, the chlorophill maximum, and a depth well below the chlorohyll maximum as discussed by the authors, which indicated sufficient uptake of upwardly diffusing nitrate to account for the appearance of nitrate.
Journal ArticleDOI
The seasonal cycle of surface chlorophyll in the Peruvian upwelling system: A modelling study
TL;DR: The seasonal variability of surface chlorophyll in the northern Humboldt Current System is studied using satellite data, in situ observations and model simulations as mentioned in this paper, and the results suggest that seasonal variability in the mixed layer depth is the main controlling factor of the seasonality.
