Nitrogen modulates phytoplankton growth in spring in the South China Sea
TL;DR: In this paper, the roles of nitrogen in modulating phytoplankton growth in the South China Sea (SCS), an oligotrophic marginal sea in the western Pacific Ocean, by examining (1) the in situ nitrate and nitrite concentrations [NO3+NO2]; (2) the [ NO 3 + NO 2 ]/[ soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP )] in the euphotic layer; (3) phyto-ankon growth in response to nutrient enrichments; and (4) the spatial distribution of nitrate-based new production
Journal ArticleDOI
Ammonia excretion and total N budget for gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) and its effect on water quality conditions
TL;DR: Using the results from this study, it was possible to calculate the sources and sinks of ammonia-N to the fishponds in Eilat and find the endogenous excretion rate, which is similar to that of other marine fish and lower than that of freshwater species.
Journal ArticleDOI
Mariculture of Kappaphycus alvarezii (Rhodophyta, Solieriaceae) color strains in tropical waters of Yucatán, México
TL;DR: This study shows that K. alvarezii can be grown in the tropical waters of the Yucatan peninsula and shows that a 10-fold increase in weight was obtained after 30 days in cultivation for all the colored strains as propagule weight increased and the growth rate was reduced.
Journal ArticleDOI
Iron and regenerated production: Evidence for biological iron recycling in two marine environments
TL;DR: It is argued that, as is the case for N, recycling of cellular Fe to support regenerated production could be an important component of marine ecosystem dynamics, especially in areas low in Fe.
Journal ArticleDOI
In situ fluxes of dissolved inorganic nitrogen from the sponge community on Conch Reef, Key Largo, Florida
TL;DR: This paper measured ammonium and nitrate plus nitrite fluxes from 14 common sponge species on a Florida Keys reef (Conch Reef) using a combination of incubation experiments and an in situ method that requires no manipulation of the sponge.
