TL;DR: The considerable growth in the science and application of pulmonary rehabilitation since 2006 adds further support for its efficacy in a wide range of individuals with chronic respiratory disease.
Journal ArticleDOI
Pulmonary rehabilitation for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
TL;DR: In four important domains of quality of life (QoL) (Chronic Respiratory Questionnaire (CRQ) scores for dyspnoea, fatigue, emotional function and mastery), the effect was larger than the minimal clinically important difference (MCID) of 0.4%.
Journal ArticleDOI
An Official American Thoracic Society Statement: Update on the Mechanisms, Assessment, and Management of Dyspnea
Mark B. Parshall,Richard M. Schwartzstein,Lewis Adams,Robert B. Banzett,Harold L. Manning,Jean Bourbeau,Peter M.A. Calverley,Audrey Gift,Andrew Harver,Suzanne C. Lareau,Donald A. Mahler,Paula Meek,Denis E. O'Donnell +12 more
TL;DR: There is a critical need for interdisciplinary translational research to connect Dyspnea mechanisms with clinical treatment and to validate dyspnea measures as patient-reported outcomes for clinical trials.
Journal ArticleDOI
Pulmonary Rehabilitation: Joint ACCP/AACVPR Evidence-Based Clinical Practice Guidelines
Andrew L. Ries,Gerene Bauldoff,Brian W. Carlin,Richard Casaburi,Charles F. Emery,Donald A. Mahler,Barry J. Make,Carolyn L. Rochester,Richard ZuWallack,Carla Herrerias +9 more
TL;DR: Substantial new evidence that pulmonary rehabilitation is beneficial for patients with COPD and other chronic lung diseases and several areas of research provide opportunities for future research that can advance the field and make rehabilitative treatment available to many more eligible patients in need.

Journal ArticleDOI
Postural relief of dyspnea in severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
TL;DR: The effect of body position change was studied in 17 patients with severe disabling chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and seven patients showed striking relief of dyspnea in the leaning forward position, and 3 of these obtained relief upon lying supine as well.
Journal ArticleDOI
Relationship between respiratory muscle strength and lean body mass in men with COPD
Yoshihiro Nishimura,Masaharu Tsutsumi,Hiroyuki Nakata,Tohru Tsunenari,Hitoshi Maeda,Mitsuhiro Yokoyama +5 more
TL;DR: Respiratory muscle strength is closely associated with body weight and lean body mass in patients with COPD and the present approach to compare respiratory muscle strength withLean body mass should be useful for studying the mechanism of respiratory muscle weakness in patientswith COPD.
Journal ArticleDOI
Exercise training and inspiratory muscle training in patients with bronchiectasis
TL;DR: PR is effective in improving exercise tolerance in bronchiectasis but there is no additional advantage of simultaneous IMT, and IMT may be important in the longevity of the training effects.
Journal ArticleDOI
Physiologic effects of oral supplemental feeding in malnourished patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. A randomized control study.
TL;DR: It is concluded that provision of adequate nutrient supply under controlled conditions results in significant clinical improvements in the COPD patient population, however, the intervention is costly, time-intensive, and of limited therapeutic magnitude.
Journal ArticleDOI
Chest Wall Kinematics and Breathlessness During Pursed-Lip Breathing in Patients With COPD
Roberto Bianchi,Francesco Gigliotti,Isabella Romagnoli,Barbara Lanini,Carla Castellani,Michela Grazzini,Giorgio Scano +6 more
TL;DR: By lengthening of TE and TTOT, PLB decreases VCWee and reduces breathlessness, related to baseline airway obstruction but not to hyperinflation (FRC).
