An Examination of Exploration and Exploitation Capabilities: Implications for Product Innovation and Market Performance

TLDR
In this paper, the authors employ the dynamic capabilities perspective to gain a greater understanding of the conversion of firm resources into exploitation and exploration capabilities and the influence of these firm capabilities on firm outcomes.
Abstract
The authors employ the dynamic capabilities perspective to gain a greater understanding of the conversion of firm resources into exploitation and exploration capabilities and the influence of these firm capabilities on firm outcomes. Specifically, they theorize that marketing and technological resources provide a foundation for the establishment of exploitation and exploration capabilities, respectively, and that these dynamic capabilities influence the degree of product innovation and market performance. The theorized relationships, which the authors examine using a survey of 111 U.S. importers, indicate that marketing resources influence an importer's development of exploitation capabilities, whereas technological resources influence the development of exploration capabilities. Furthermore, the authors find that exploitation capabilities provide a foundation for the development of exploration capabilities. They also find that whereas exploitation capabilities are negatively related to the degre...

Is innovation always beneficial? A meta-analysis of the relationship between innovation and performance in SMEs

TL;DR: In this paper, a meta-analysis synthesizes empirical findings in order to obtain evidence whether and especially under which circumstances smaller, resource-scarce firms benefit from innovation, and they find that the innovation-performance relationship is context dependent.

Exploring the role of dynamic capabilities in firm performance under the resource-based view framework

TL;DR: The findings show that dynamic capabilities can mediate the firm's valuable, rare, inimitable and non-substitutableVRIN resources to improve performance, and dynamic learning capability most effectively mediates the influence of VRIN resources on performance.

The impact of dynamic capabilities on operational marketing and technological capabilities: investigating the role of environmental turbulence

TL;DR: A model of how frequent dynamic capability utilization, assessed through its underlying processes of sensing and reconfiguring, relates to marketing and technological capabilities, as well as how market, technological, and competitor turbulence might affect these relationships are proposed.

Dynamic capabilities and strategic management

TL;DR: The dynamic capabilities framework as mentioned in this paper analyzes the sources and methods of wealth creation and capture by private enterprise firms operating in environments of rapid technological change, and suggests that private wealth creation in regimes of rapid technology change depends in large measure on honing intemal technological, organizational, and managerial processes inside the firm.
