TLDR
Based on experience with anemia treatment in chronic kidney disease, critical illness, and cancer, finding the appropriate indications for the specific treatment of AI will require improved understanding and a balanced consideration of the contribution of anemia to each patient's morbidity and the impact of anemic treatment on the patient's prognosis in a variety of disease settings.

Iron metabolism and iron disorders revisited in the hepcidin era

TL;DR: Improved understanding of iron homeostasis and its regulation is leading to the development of targeted therapies for iron overload and inflammation, mainly centered on the manipulation of the hepcidin-ferroportin axis.
Journal ArticleDOI

Anemia and iron metabolism in COVID-19: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

TL;DR: A systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate biomarkers of anemia and iron metabolism in patients diagnosed with COVID-19 and explored their prognostic value found that hemoglobin levels were lower with older age, higher percentage of subjects with diabetes, hypertension and overall comorbidities, and admitted to intensive care.
Journal ArticleDOI

Iron deficiency anaemia revisited

TL;DR: This review provides recent updates and guidance on the diagnosis and management of iron deficiency anaemia in multiple clinical settings.
Journal ArticleDOI

Therapeutic versus prophylactic anticoagulation for severe COVID-19: A randomized phase II clinical trial (HESACOVID).

TL;DR: Therapeutic enoxaparin improves gas exchange and decreases the need for mechanical ventilation in severe COVID–19 patients requiring mechanical ventilation.

Hepcidin Regulates Cellular Iron Efflux by Binding to Ferroportin and Inducing Its Internalization

TL;DR: It is reported that hepcidin bound to ferroportin in tissue culture cells, leading to decreased export of cellular iron and the posttranslational regulation of ferroports by hePCidin may complete a homeostatic loop.
Journal ArticleDOI

Anemia of Chronic Disease

TL;DR: Advances in knowledge of the causes and management of the anemia of chronic disease are discussed.
Journal ArticleDOI

IL-6 mediates hypoferremia of inflammation by inducing the synthesis of the iron regulatory hormone hepcidin

TL;DR: These studies in human liver cell cultures, mice, and human volunteers indicate that IL-6 is the necessary and sufficient cytokine for the induction of hepcidin during inflammation and that the IL- 6-hepcid in axis is responsible for the hypoferremia of inflammation.
Journal ArticleDOI

The gene encoding the iron regulatory peptide hepcidin is regulated by anemia, hypoxia, and inflammation

TL;DR: Modifications of hepcidin gene expression suggest a key role for hepciridin in iron homeostasis under various pathophysiological conditions, which may support the pharmaceutical use of hePCidin agonists and antagonists in various ironHomeostasis disorders.
