Anemia of Chronic Disease

TLDR
Advances in knowledge of the causes and management of the anemia of chronic disease are discussed.
Abstract
New therapeutic strategies have emerged along with our understanding that disturbances of iron homeostasis, impaired proliferation of erythroid progenitor cells, and blunted erythropoietin response occur in anemia of chronic disease. This review discusses advances in our knowledge of the causes and management of the condition.

Advances in metal-induced oxidative stress and human disease

Klaudia Jomová, +1 more
- 10 May 2011 -
TL;DR: An overview of redox and non-redox metal-induced formation of free radicals and the role of oxidative stress in toxic action of metals is provided.

IL-6 mediates hypoferremia of inflammation by inducing the synthesis of the iron regulatory hormone hepcidin

TL;DR: These studies in human liver cell cultures, mice, and human volunteers indicate that IL-6 is the necessary and sufficient cytokine for the induction of hepcidin during inflammation and that the IL- 6-hepcid in axis is responsible for the hypoferremia of inflammation.

Dissecting racial bias in an algorithm used to manage the health of populations

TL;DR: It is suggested that the choice of convenient, seemingly effective proxies for ground truth can be an important source of algorithmic bias in many contexts.

The CRIT Study: Anemia and blood transfusion in the critically ill--current clinical practice in the United States.

TL;DR: The number of RBC transfusions a patient received during the study was independently associated with longer ICU and hospital lengths of stay and an increase in mortality and a nadir hemoglobin level of <9 g/dL was a predictor of increased mortality and length of stay.

The effects of normal as compared with low hematocrit values in patients with cardiac disease who are receiving hemodialysis and epoetin.

TL;DR: In patients with clinically evident congestive heart failure or ischemic heart disease who are receiving hemodialysis, administration of epoetin to raise their hematocrit to 42 percent is not recommended.

Anemia and blood transfusion in critically ill patients.

TL;DR: This multicenter observational study reveals the common occurrence of anemia and the large use of blood transfusion in critically ill patients and provides evidence of an association between transfusions and diminished organ function as well as between transfusion and mortality.

Prevalence of anemia in persons 65 years and older in the United States: evidence for a high rate of unexplained anemia

TL;DR: Older persons with anemia are common, albeit not severe, in the older population, and a substantial proportion of anemia is of indeterminate cause, which must be further investigated in older persons.
