TLDR
Five sources of anthropogenic pollution that affect marine and freshwater ecosystems are discussed: sewage, nutrients and terrigenous materials, crude oil, heavy metals and plastics, and the direct and indirect effects that these pollutants have on a range of aquatic organisms even when the pollutant source is distant from the sink.

COVID-19 and surface water quality: Improved lake water quality during the lockdown.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors quantitatively demonstrated the improvement in surface water quality in terms of suspended particulate matter (SPM) in the Vembanad Lake, the longest freshwater lake in India.
Journal ArticleDOI

Assessment and management of lake eutrophication: A case study in Lake Erhai, China.

TL;DR: Effective measures to maintain sustainable development in the watershed are proposed, along with a framework for an early warning system adopting the latest technologies (geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing (RS)) for preventing eutrophication.
Journal ArticleDOI

Effect of microplastics and microplastic-metal combinations on growth and chlorophyll a concentration of Chlorella vulgaris.

TL;DR: Results showed that lower concentrations of microplastics had no impact while higher concentrations significantly reduced growth and chlorophyll a content of the freshwater microalgae, Chlorella vulgaris, and the combined effect of the microplastic-metal combination (Cu, Zn, Mn).
Journal ArticleDOI

An overview on heavy metal resistant microorganisms for simultaneous treatment of multiple chemical pollutants at co-contaminated sites, and their multipurpose application.

TL;DR: This review attempts to gather information on recent progress on studies on different heavy metal resistant microorganisms for their potential of treatment of co-contaminated sites, and multipurpose application of heavy metal microorganisms.

The pollution of the marine environment by plastic debris: a review.

TL;DR: The deleterious effects of plastic debris on the marine environment were reviewed by bringing together most of the literature published so far on the topic, and a variety of approaches are urgently required to mitigate the problem.

Ecological Geography of the Sea

TL;DR: In this article, the authors used CZCS images to partition the Pelagic ecology of the oceans into four primary biomes: Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean, Pacific and Southern Ocean.

River plastic emissions to the world's oceans.

TL;DR: A global model of plastic inputs from rivers into oceans based on waste management, population density and hydrological information is presented to provide baseline data for ocean plastic mass balance exercises, and assist in prioritizing future plastic debris monitoring and mitigation strategies.

Effects of terrestrial runoff on the ecology of corals and coral reefs: review and synthesis

TL;DR: This paper reviews and evaluates the current state of knowledge on the direct effects of terrestrial runoff on hard coral colonies, coral reproduction and recruitment, and organisms that interact with coral populations and summarises geographic and biological factors that determine local and regional levels of resistance and resilience to degradation.
Journal ArticleDOI

An overview of chemical additives present in plastics: Migration, release, fate and environmental impact during their use, disposal and recycling.

TL;DR: The present overview highlights the waste management and pollution challenges, emphasising on the various chemical substances contained in all plastic products for enhancing polymer properties and prolonging their life.
