TLDR
This research develops a method which would allow small amounts of biochar to provide significant protection for plants in their most vulnerable stage, the seedling, and demonstrates that, in sandy substrates, 30% biochar, concentrated in seedling root zones, significantly increases seedling resistance to wilting.

The Impact of Biochar Application on Soil Properties and Plant Growth of Pot Grown Lettuce (Lactuca sativa) and Cabbage (Brassica chinensis)

TL;DR: In this article, the effect of rice-husk char (potentially biochar) application on the growth of transplanted lettuce (Lactuca sativa) and Chinese cabbage (Brassica chinensis) was assessed in a pot experiment over a three crop (lettuce-cabbage-lettuce) cycle in Cambodia.
Journal ArticleDOI

Biochar reduced nitrate leaching and improved soil moisture content without yield improvements in a four-year field study

TL;DR: The use of biochar (BC) is discussed as a strategy to sequester carbon in soils, to reduce GHG emissions and improve soil fertility, but the responses of crop yields to biochar amendments in agricultural ecosystems, specifically under temperate field conditions, are still uncertain this paper.

Plant Propagation: Principles and Practices

TL;DR: This book discusses Propagation Methods and Rootstocks for the Important Fruit and Nut Species, and theoretical Aspects of Grafting and Budding, and Principles of Tissue Culture for Micropropagation.
Journal ArticleDOI

A quantitative review of the effects of biochar application to soils on crop productivity using meta-analysis

TL;DR: In this paper, a statistical meta-analysis was performed with the aim of evaluating the relationship between biochar and crop productivity (either yield or above-ground biomass) with an overall small, but statistically significant, benefit of biochar application to soils on crop productivity, with a grand mean increase of 10%.

Maize yield and nutrition during 4 years after biochar application to a Colombian savanna oxisol

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors studied the effect of a single application of 0, 8 and 20 t of biochar to a Colombian savanna Oxisol for 4 years (2003-2006) under a maize-soybean rotation.
Journal ArticleDOI

Impact of Biochar Amendment on Fertility of a Southeastern Coastal Plain Soil

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors hypothesized that biochar additions to agricultural soils in the southeastern U.S. coastal plain region have meager soil fertility characteristics because of their sandy textures, acidic pH values, kaolinitic clays, low cation exchange capacities, and diminutive soil organic carbon contents.

Characterization of designer biochar produced at different temperatures and their effects on a loamy sand

TL;DR: In this article, the authors hypothesize that the biochar production process can be tailored to form designer biochars that have specific chemical characteristics matched to selective chemical and/or physical issues of degraded soil.
