TLDR
The literature has been critically reviewed in order to assess the attenuation processes governing contaminants in leachate affected aquifers as discussed by the authors, focusing on dissolved organic matter, xenobiotic organic compounds, inorganic macrocomponents as anions and cations, and heavy metals.

A Quick and Reliable Method to Detect and Quantify Contamination from MSW Landfills: a Case Study

TL;DR: In this paper, an integrated and reliable methodology for a rapid assessment of the real impact of a municipal solid waste landfill, in the main environmental matrices (air and water) of the surrounding areas has been provided.
Journal ArticleDOI

Fenton treatment of sanitary landfill leachate: optimization of operational parameters, characterization of sludge and toxicology.

TL;DR: It is concluded that the Fenton process alone is not appropriate for treatment of leachate, because it could negatively affect the ecosystem in receiving water bodies, but it could represent a viable alternative for the pretreatment of landfill leachates.
Journal ArticleDOI

Novel hydrolytic extremely halotolerant alkaliphiles from mature landfill leachate with key involvement in maturation process.

TL;DR: Examination of their hydrolytic ability through the performance of lipase, protease and β-glucosidase assays revealed that all halotolerant alkaliphiles isolated exhibited extremely high lipolytic activities, indicating a key involvement of extremophilic microbiota at the late landfill maturation stage.

Comparative study on different Anammox systems

Grzegorz Cema
TL;DR: The legal requirements for wastewater discharge into environment, especially to zones exposed to eutrophication, lately became stricter as mentioned in this paper. Nowadays wastewater treatment plants have to manage with the...
Journal ArticleDOI

Estimation of transport parameters of phenolic compounds and inorganic contaminants through composite landfill liners using one-dimensional mass transport model

TL;DR: It is indicated that about 35-50% of transport of phenolic compounds to the groundwater is believed to be prevented with the use of zeolite and bentonite materials in landfill liner systems.
