TLDR
In this article, the authors outline the recent advances in the study of lignan and norlignan biosynthesis and present a model for biomimetic chemistry and its application.Abstract:
Lignans and norlignans constitute abundant classes of phenylpropanoids. Biosynthesis of these compounds has received widespread interest, mainly because they have various clinically important biological activities. In addition, lignans and norlignans are often biosynthesized and deposited in significant amounts in the heartwood region of trees as a metabolic event of heartwood formation, probably preventing heart rot by heart-rot fungi. Furthermore, biosynthetic reactions of lignans and norlignans involve unique stereochemical properties that are of great interest in terms of bioorganic chemistry and are expected to provide a model for biomimetic chemistry and its application. We outline the recent advances in the study of lignan and norlignan biosynthesis.read more

Towards a Systems Approach for Lignin Biosynthesis in Populus trichocarpa: Transcript Abundance and Specificity of the Monolignol Biosynthetic Genes
TL;DR: The identified 23 genes that most probably encode monolignol biosynthesis enzymes during wood formation are identified and evidence suggesting functional redundancy at the transcript level for phenylalanine ammonia-lyase and cinnamate 4-hydroxylase is found.

Enantiomeric natural products: occurrence and biogenesis.
Jennifer M. Finefield,David H. Sherman,Martin Kreitman,Robert M. Williams,Robert M. Williams +4 more
TL;DR: In nature, chiral natural products are usually produced in optically pure form-however, occasionally both enantiomers are formed; these enantiomeric natural products can arise from a single species or from different genera and/or species.

TL;DR: A recent challenge to the currently accepted theory of chemically controlled lignification, attempting to bring lignin into line with more organized biopolymers such as proteins, is logically inconsistent with the most basic details of the structure.
