TLDR
Cogongrass is a major impediment to reforestation efforts in southeast Asia, the number one weed in agronomic and vegetable production in many parts of Africa, and is responsible for thousands of hectares of lost native habitat in the southeastern U.S.Abstract:
Cogongrass is considered to be one of the ten most troublesome and problematic weedy species in the world. This species is found throughout tropical and subtropical regions, generally in areas dist...read more

Restoration of Degraded Tropical Forest Landscapes
TL;DR: The current scale of deforestation in tropical regions and the large areas of degraded lands now present underscore the urgent need to restore biodiversity, ecological functioning, and the supply of goods and ecological services previously used by poor rural communities.
Journal ArticleDOI
Interactions among Amazon land use, forests and climate: prospects for a near-term forest tipping point
TL;DR: Several important trends could prevent a near-term forest dieback as fire-sensitive investments accumulate in the landscape, property holders use less fire and invest more in fire control, and emerging carbon market incentives for reductions in deforestation could support these trends.
Journal ArticleDOI
Climate change increases risk of plant invasion in the Eastern United States
TL;DR: Bioclimatic envelope modeling is used to assess current climatic habitat, or lands climatically suitable for invasion, for three of the most dominant and aggressive invasive plants in the southeast United States: kudzu, privet, and cogongrass, and an ensemble of 12 atmosphere-ocean general circulation models are used to project changes in Climatic habitat for the three invasive species by 2100.

An Operational framework for defining and monitoring forest degradation
Ian D. Thompson,Manuel R. Guariguata,Kimiko Okabe,Carlos Bahamondez,Robert Nasi,Victoria Heymell,César Sabogal +6 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors suggest that there are types of forest degradation that produce a continuum of decline in provision of ecosystem services, from those in primary forests through various forms of managed forests to deforestation.

Grass-dominated vegetation, not species-diverse natural savanna, replaces degraded tropical forests on the southern edge of the Amazon Basin
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors distinguish between species-diverse natural savannas and other types of fire-maintained grass-dominated vegetation that replaced tropical forests between 1986 and 2005 in 22,500 km 2 of eastern lowland Bolivia.

Observations on the vegetative growth pattern of speargrass (imperata cylindrica (L.) beauv.)
TL;DR: Careful observation of plants grown from mature rhizome fragments indicated that a young plant initiates new rhizomes between the third and fourth leaf-stage, indicating that speargrass as a problem weed is facing a new challenge.
Journal ArticleDOI
Agroforestry innovations for Imperata grassland rehabilitation: workshop recommendations
TL;DR: Problem identification Mega Imperata grasslands are those of at least 10,000 ha of contiguous and essentially 'pure' Imperata with only minor components of other species with the present minimum size for practical mapping.

Manual and Chemical Control of Imperata cylindrica on Tea Land in Sri Lanka
S. Sandanam,H.D. Jayasinghe +1 more
TL;DR: In an experiment conducted in an almost pure stand of Imperata cylindrica to compare manual and chemical methods of control, forking out rhizomes up to a depth of 45 cm gave long-lasting control.
