Combustion in swirling flows: A review
Nicholas Syred,János M. Beér +1 more
TLDR
The main effects of swirl are to improve flame stability as a result of the formation of toroidal recirculation zones and to reduce combustion lengths by producing high rates of entrainment of the ambient fluid and fast mixing as discussed by the authors.About:

Design and performance study of an alpha V-type stirling engine converted from diesel engine
TL;DR: In this paper, an alpha V-type Stirling engine converted from a Yamaha four-stroke diesel engine was realized with few major modifications on the engine housing, heater head, swirl burner, regenerator, oil lubrication system, auxiliary cooler and flywheel.
Journal ArticleDOI
Analytical modelling of flame transfer functions for technically premixed flames
TL;DR: In this paper , the authors studied the linear response to harmonic acoustic excitation of the total heat release rate in theoretically premixed flames (Flame Transfer Function, FTF) in case of an ideal swirl burner, based on the linearization of the production rate for the mean reaction progress variable modelled with a turbulent flame speed closure.
Journal ArticleDOI
Identification and dynamics of coherent structures in a Coanda swirling jet flow
TL;DR: In this paper , a generic swirl burner was fitted with a base plate in a position so that any of these two flows, OJF and CoJF, could be obtained within the same burner geometry.
Pdf simulations of non-premixed sydney swirling bluff-body flame
TL;DR: In this paper, the velocity-turbulent frequency-compositions JPDF method is applied to simulate the non-premixed Sydney swirling bluff-body flame (SM1), and a new consistent hybrid FV/particle algorithm is developed and used to solve the PDF model equations.
Application of chemical kinetic modeling to improve design and performance criteria for a practical incineration system
TL;DR: In this article, a detailed thermo-chemical kinetics with networked ideal reactor model was applied to simulate a practical combustion system the Secondary Combustion Chamber (SCC) of the Rotary Kiln incineration Simulator (RKIS) at the EPA facility at Research Triangle Park, NC.

Theory of the vortex breakdown phenomenon
TL;DR: In this paper, it is shown that vortex breakdown is not a manifestation of instability or of any other effect indicated by study of infinitesimal disturbances alone, but instead a finite transition between two dynamically conjugate states of axisymmetric flow, analogous to the hydraulic jump in open-channel flow.
Journal ArticleDOI
On stationary and travelling vortex breakdowns
TL;DR: In this article, the authors describe some experiments in swirling flows in a diverging cylindrical tube in which various types of vortex breakdowns were observed, viz. mild (double helix) breakdown, spiral breakdown, and axisymmetric breakdown.

Some observations of the vortex breakdown phenomenon
TL;DR: In this article, a cylindrical vortex, formed in a long tube, was used to study the "vortex breakdown" that has been previously reported in investigations of the flow over slender delta wings.
