TLDR
The main effects of swirl are to improve flame stability as a result of the formation of toroidal recirculation zones and to reduce combustion lengths by producing high rates of entrainment of the ambient fluid and fast mixing as discussed by the authors.

Introduction of A New Three-Way Swirling Combustion (TSC) Technology with Air Curtain Insulation Effect for Solid Waste

TL;DR: In this article, a new cyclone combustor, three-way swirling combustion (TSC), is introduced through a commercial scale pilot plant experiment for refused plastic fuel (RPF).

Investigation on the Acoustic Behavior of a Turbulent Swirl-Stabilized Combustor Fed with Liquid Fuel

TL;DR: In this article, a swirl-stabilized combustor fed with liquid fuel (dodecane) is used for the investigation of combustion instability, structure of PVC and their relative strength.
Journal ArticleDOI

Influence of swirl and tumble motion inside the combustion chamber of a compression ignited engine on vertices formation

TL;DR: In this article, the vertices formation and velocity inside the combustion chamber were analyzed by using numerical analysis (AVL FIRE Software), to generate pure tumble motion, pure swirl motion, no in-cylinder motion of the air, and other combinations on tumble and swirl motion.

A comparison between the fractal and swirl injector of diesel spray characteristics in the burner system

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the performance of spray generators (swirler and fractal grids) to the spray characteristics while related to the prediction of combustion process and the results showed that the swirler can reasonably control the penetration length of the spray from preventing contact to the wall of combustor chamber and it is predicted that the combustion will be more complete due to its short primary spray breakup and reduce the emission.

Theory of the vortex breakdown phenomenon

TL;DR: In this paper, it is shown that vortex breakdown is not a manifestation of instability or of any other effect indicated by study of infinitesimal disturbances alone, but instead a finite transition between two dynamically conjugate states of axisymmetric flow, analogous to the hydraulic jump in open-channel flow.
Journal ArticleDOI

On stationary and travelling vortex breakdowns

TL;DR: In this article, the authors describe some experiments in swirling flows in a diverging cylindrical tube in which various types of vortex breakdowns were observed, viz. mild (double helix) breakdown, spiral breakdown, and axisymmetric breakdown.
Journal ArticleDOI

Some observations of the vortex breakdown phenomenon

TL;DR: In this article, a cylindrical vortex, formed in a long tube, was used to study the "vortex breakdown" that has been previously reported in investigations of the flow over slender delta wings.
