TLDR
Rina Dechter synthesizes three decades of researchers work on constraint processing in AI, databases and programming languages, operations research, management science, and applied mathematics to provide the first comprehensive examination of the theory that underlies constraint processing algorithms.Abstract:
Constraint satisfaction is a simple but powerful tool. Constraints identify the impossible and reduce the realm of possibilities to effectively focus on the possible, allowing for a natural declarative formulation of what must be satisfied, without expressing how. The field of constraint reasoning has matured over the last three decades with contributions from a diverse community of researchers in artificial intelligence, databases and programming languages, operations research, management science, and applied mathematics. Today, constraint problems are used to model cognitive tasks in vision, language comprehension, default reasoning, diagnosis, scheduling, temporal and spatial reasoning.
In Constraint Processing, Rina Dechter, synthesizes these contributions, along with her own significant work, to provide the first comprehensive examination of the theory that underlies constraint processing algorithms. Throughout, she focuses on fundamental tools and principles, emphasizing the representation and analysis of algorithms.

Graphical Models, Exponential Families, and Variational Inference
TL;DR: The variational approach provides a complementary alternative to Markov chain Monte Carlo as a general source of approximation methods for inference in large-scale statistical models.
Book
Handbook of Constraint Programming
TL;DR: Researchers from other fields should find in this handbook an effective way to learn about constraint programming and to possibly use some of the constraint programming concepts and techniques in their work, thus providing a means for a fruitful cross-fertilization among different research areas.
Book
Knowledge Representation and Reasoning
TL;DR: This landmark text takes the central concepts of knowledge representation developed over the last 50 years and illustrates them in a lucid and compelling way, and offers the first true synthesis of the field in over a decade.

Handbook of Knowledge Representation
TL;DR: The Handbook of Knowledge Representation is an up-to-date review of twenty-five key topics in knowledge representation written by the leaders of each field, an essential resource for students, researchers and practitioners in all areas of Artificial Intelligence.

Learning Dependency-Based Compositional Semantics
TL;DR: A new semantic formalism, dependency-based compositional semantics (DCS) is developed and a log-linear distribution over DCS logical forms is defined and it is shown that the system obtains comparable accuracies to even state-of-the-art systems that do require annotated logical forms.

Deciding Linear Inequalities by Computing Loop Residues
TL;DR: V R Pratt has shown that the real and integer feastbdlty of sets of linear mequallUes of the form x _< y + c can be decided quickly by examining the loops of certain graphs.

A system for reasoning about time
TL;DR: The salient features of a new system for reasoning about time that represents time primarily — though not exclusively — in terms of intervals, and performs deductions on this representation has a mechanism for maintaining consistency in the representation and discovering the origin of inconsistencies.

Combining qualitative and quantitative constraints in temporal reasoning
TL;DR: A general model for temporal reasoning, capable of handling both qualitative and quantitative information, is presented, involving qualitative networks augmented by quantitative domain constraints, some of which can be solved in polynomial time using arc and path consistency.
An Outlook on Truth Maintenance.
TL;DR: This report describes a TMS algorithm that is substantially different from previous systems and performs deduction in traditional propositional logic in such a way that the premise set from which deduction is being done can be easily manipulated.

The constrainedness of search
TL;DR: A parameter that measures the "constrainedness" of an ensemble of combinatorial problems is introduced, which generalizes a number of parameters previously used in different NP-complete problem classes and can be directly compared.
