Abstract
Several organizations have developed ongoing crowdsourcing communities that repeatedly collect ideas for new products and services from a large, dispersed “crowd” of non-experts (consumers) over time. Despite its promises, little is known about the nature of an individual’s ideation efforts in such an online community. Studying Dell’s IdeaStorm community, serial ideators are found to be more likely than consumers with only one idea to generate an idea the organization find valuable enough to implement, but are unlikely to repeat their early success once their ideas are implemented. As ideators with past success attempt to again come up with ideas that will excite the organization, they instead end up proposing ideas similar to their ideas that were already implemented (i.e., they generate less diverse ideas). The negative effects of past success are somewhat mitigated for ideators with diverse commenting activity on others’ ideas. These findings highlight some of the challenges in maintaining an ongoing supply of quality ideas from the crowd over time.

An original design approach for stimulating the ideation of new product features

TL;DR: A new approach has been developed for supporting the identification of valuable product features in the early phases of engineering design cycles through a method implemented in a computer application and prototype software that combines the concepts belonging to different categories of the classification.

Recruiting valuable participants in online IDEA generation: The role of brief instructions

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigate how the design of brief instructions intervenes in the recruitment of people with highly creative profiles in crowdsourcing, and they find that there is a triple interaction effect between individuals' level of creativity and their design of instructions (number of instructions and provision of an expected example).

The effects of collecting and connecting activities on knowledge creation in organizations

TL;DR: This work empirically validate the claim that individual knowledge creation is a prerequisite of collective knowledge creation and explains the link between organizational and IT mechanisms as input and knowledge creation as output.

Crowdsourcing for sustainable urban logistics: Exploring the factors influencing crowd workers' participative behavior

TL;DR: In this article, the authors developed a research model to explain the factors influencing crowd workers' participative behavior, and recommended that crowd logistics platforms should offer reasonable monetary incentives and keep these under constant review, build a high degree of trust and cooperation with their crowd workers, and initiate activities geared towards promoting satisfaction at work.
