Abstract
Several organizations have developed ongoing crowdsourcing communities that repeatedly collect ideas for new products and services from a large, dispersed “crowd” of non-experts (consumers) over time. Despite its promises, little is known about the nature of an individual’s ideation efforts in such an online community. Studying Dell’s IdeaStorm community, serial ideators are found to be more likely than consumers with only one idea to generate an idea the organization find valuable enough to implement, but are unlikely to repeat their early success once their ideas are implemented. As ideators with past success attempt to again come up with ideas that will excite the organization, they instead end up proposing ideas similar to their ideas that were already implemented (i.e., they generate less diverse ideas). The negative effects of past success are somewhat mitigated for ideators with diverse commenting activity on others’ ideas. These findings highlight some of the challenges in maintaining an ongoing supply of quality ideas from the crowd over time.

The analysis and presentation of patents to support engineering design

TL;DR: The use of crowdsourcing as a means to post tasks online for a crowd of people to participate and complete and establish basic crowd capabilities in understanding patent text and interpreting patent drawings is proposed.

Improving the effectiveness of social media-based crowdsourcing innovations: roles of assurance mechanism and innovator's behaviour

TL;DR: The effectiveness of assurance mechanism is confirmed by its positive relationship with solver's behaviour, thereby improving seeker's retention behaviour and providing guidance to the platform operator on how to design the assurance mechanism to match the innovation task and innovator's behaviour to reduce seeker's uncertainty, thereby facilitating the seeker's decision-making.

Designing technology for on‐demand delivery: The effect of customer tipping on crowdsourced driver behavior and last mile performance

TL;DR: In this article , the authors explore customer tipping and its implications on last-mile delivery performance and find evidence that the impact of tipping on driver behavior is geography-contingent, with tipping having unexpectedly detrimental effects in high population density areas relative to low density areas.

Getting the Picture Too Late: Handoffs and the Effectiveness of Idea Implementation in Creative Work

TL;DR: For example, this paper found that employees are often handed ideas to implement that were developed by others, yet they try to win social support for their own ideas by trying to win the support of others.
