Social Navigation and Seamful Design

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the effects of making a computational system's social context observable to users in a way that- is separated from the service's main functionality in the interface, allowing it to become peripheral and non-obtrusive;- uses simple models and little interpretation;- opens up the service to allow for user appropriation of both service content and functionality; and- is informative rather than proactive in order to empower the user rather than acting on the user's behalf.

Presence: Form, Content and Consciousness

TL;DR: This chapter presents a rather wide-ranging perspective on presence as a central, characterizing feature of conscious mental life, and considers the importance of media form for the sense of presence, before moving on to the relationship between presence and thesense of self considered in evolutionary terms.

Building bridges within learning communities through ontologies and thematic objects

TL;DR: This article explores the potential of extending communication through artefacts to heterogeneous, anonymous and asynchronous learner communities by drawing on existing work, e.g. in the areas of "social navigation" and recommender systems.

Swarm intelligence: new techniques for adaptive systems to provide learning support

TL;DR: A survey of the various approaches in swarm intelligence that explores potential mechanisms to adapt and individualise learning and assessment is provided.

Swarm-based sequencing recommendations in e-learning

TL;DR: In this article, the authors introduce an approach to recommending the sequencing of e-learning modules for distance learners based on self-organization theory and describe an architecture which supports the recording, processing and presentation of collective learner behavior designed to create a feedback loop informing learners of successful paths towards the attainment of learning goals.

The Death and Life of Great American Cities

Jane Jacobs
TL;DR: The conditions for city diversity, the generators of diversity, and the need for mixed primary uses are discussed in this paper, with a focus on the use of small blocks for small blocks.

Image of the city

Abstract: What does the city's form actually mean to the people who live there? What can the city planner do to make the city's image more vivid and memorable to the city dweller? To answer these questions, Mr. Lynch, supported by studies of Los Angeles, Boston, and Jersey City, formulates a new criterion -- imageability -- and shows its potential value as a guide for the building and rebuilding of cities. The wide scope of this study leads to an original and vital method for the evaluation of city form. The architect, the planner, and certainly the city dweller will all want to read this book.

Metaphors We Live by

TL;DR: Lakoff and Johnson as discussed by the authors present a very attractive book for linguists to read, which is written in a direct and accessible style; while it introduces and uses a number of new terms, for the most part it is free of jargon.
