TLDR
TBT can strongly interact with hepatic microsomal P-450 in fish leading to destruction of native enzyme and inhibition of enzyme activity in scup, indicating that TBT has different effects on these reductases.

Ecotoxicology of organotin compounds.

TL;DR: The aquatic ecotoxicology of organotins is reviewed based on a multidisciplinary approach involving environmental chemical, toxicological, and ecological aspects, and the influence of speciation for bioavailability, basic modes of toxic action, and aquatic toxicity are discussed.
Journal ArticleDOI

Induction of cytochrome P450 as a biomarker for environmental contamination in aquatic ecosystems

TL;DR: Application of the induction of cytochrome P4501A (CYP1A), certainly the best studied biomarker, in field trials with freshwater and marine fish is reviewed and shows that CYP1A induction is significantly related to contaminant levels in the environment in 93% of the investigated field studies.

The Steroid Hormone Biosynthesis Pathway as a Target for Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals

TL;DR: This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the state of knowledge regarding the mechanisms by which chemicals interfere with the function of steroidogenic enzymes in various tissues and organisms.
Journal ArticleDOI

Induction and inhibition of aromatase (CYP19) activity by various classes of pesticides in H295R human adrenocortical carcinoma cells.

TL;DR: Time- response curves for cAMP induction and concentration-response curves for aromatase induction by vinclozolin, atrazine, and IBMX were similar, suggesting that the mechanism of aromat enzyme induction by these pesticides is mediated through inhibition of phosphodiesterase activity.
Journal ArticleDOI

Cytochrome P4501A induction and inhibition by 3,3',4,4'-tetrachlorobiphenyl in an Ah receptor-containing fish hepatoma cell line (PLHC-1)

TL;DR: PLHC-1 cells may be a good model system for studying Ah receptor-mediated regulation of gene expression, for determining the fish-specific toxic or inducing potency of halogenated aromatic hydrocarbon congeners, and for investigating the mechanism of CYP1A inhibition or inactivation by environmental contaminants such as TCB.

Measurement of protein using bicinchoninic acid

TL;DR: This new method maintains the high sensitivity and low protein-to-protein variation associated with the Lowry technique and demonstrates a greater tolerance of the bicinchoninate reagent toward such commonly encountered interferences as nonionic detergents and simple buffer salts.
Journal ArticleDOI

Identification of three classes of cytosolic glutathione transferase common to several mammalian species: correlation between structural data and enzymatic properties.

TL;DR: It is suggested that the similarities of the isoenzymes in a class reflect evolutionary relationships and that the classification applies generally.

Effects of ortho- and non-ortho-substituted polychlorinated biphenyl congeners on the hepatic monooxygenase system in scup (Stenotomus chrysops)

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that PCB congeners with ortho-chlorine substitution, and which are effective inducers of AHH and EROD activity in mammals, are ineffective, at the doses tested, as inducers in the teleost scup.
Journal ArticleDOI

Cytochrome P-450 isozymes and monooxygenase activity in aquatic animals.

TL;DR: Further studies of cytochrome P-450 forms in aquatic species should establish additional homologies and the regulation of these forms by chemical and biological variables, possibly providing fundamental insights into the function and evolution of these proteins.

Phenyltins in water, sediment, and biota of freshwater marinas

TL;DR: A series of phenyltins and butyltin were determined in the water column, sediment, and biota of two freshwater marinas of Lake Lucerne, Switzerland as discussed by the authors.
