Exploring the Limits of Transfer Learning with a Unified Text-to-Text Transformer

This article introduced a unified framework that converts all text-based language problems into a text-to-text format and compared pre-training objectives, architectures, unlabeled data sets, transfer approaches, and other factors on dozens of language understanding tasks.
Abstract
Transfer learning, where a model is first pre-trained on a data-rich task before being fine-tuned on a downstream task, has emerged as a powerful technique in natural language processing (NLP). The effectiveness of transfer learning has given rise to a diversity of approaches, methodology, and practice. In this paper, we explore the landscape of transfer learning techniques for NLP by introducing a unified framework that converts all text-based language problems into a text-to-text format. Our systematic study compares pre-training objectives, architectures, unlabeled data sets, transfer approaches, and other factors on dozens of language understanding tasks. By combining the insights from our exploration with scale and our new ``Colossal Clean Crawled Corpus'', we achieve state-of-the-art results on many benchmarks covering summarization, question answering, text classification, and more. To facilitate future work on transfer learning for NLP, we release our data set, pre-trained models, and code.

STraTA: Self-Training with Task Augmentation for Better Few-shot Learning

TL;DR: This article proposed a self-training with task augmentation (STraTA) approach, which synthesizes a large amount of data for auxiliary-task fine-tuning from target-task unlabeled texts.

Attribute Alignment: Controlling Text Generation from Pre-trained Language Models.

TL;DR: This article proposed a simple and flexible method for controlling text generation by aligning disentangled attribute representations by learning an alignment function to guide the pre-trained, non-controlled language model to generate texts with the target attribute without changing the original language model parameters.

MoEfication: Conditional Computation of Transformer Models for Efficient Inference

TL;DR: This paper proposed to transform a large model into its mixture-of-experts (MoE) version with equal model size, namely MoEfication, which consists of splitting the parameters of feed-forward neural networks (FFNs) into multiple parts as experts, and building expert routers to decide which experts will be used for each input.

Self-training Improves Pre-training for Few-shot Learning in Task-oriented Dialog Systems

TL;DR: The authors proposed a self-training approach that iteratively labels the most confident unlabeled data to train a stronger Student model, and a new text augmentation technique (GradAug) is proposed to better train the Student by replacing non-crucial tokens using a masked language model.
