Abstract

The individual topics are adequately developed with emphasis, in the majority, on brevity of presentation rather than complete and exhaustive detail. References are listed after each chapter for the reader desiring more definitive information. \"Epidemiologic Methods and Inferences\" by Dr. Dienfeld and \"Official and Voluntary Health Agencies\" by Dr. Hilleboe are two chapters which offer especially well-organized, succinct, and effective discussions of their respective subjects. The editors state in their preface that they are presenting \". . a new way to look at preventive medicine for the medical students, general practitioners, specialists, and professional workers in official and voluntary health agencies.\" In the opinion of the reviewer, the authors have achieved their purpose by editing a book which is more an introductory text than a reference tome.

TL;DR: A qualitative histochemical assessment of glycogen loss in biopsies was made in bush-babies after running and jumping and found that glycogen depletion was greatest in the slow-twitch oxidative fibre and depletion in the fast- twitch oxidative glycolytic fibres.

A new histochemical method for the selective periodate oxidation of total tissue sialic acids.

TL;DR: 0.4mm periodic acid in approximately 1m hydrochloric acid can be used as a specific reagent for the selective visualization of sialic acids in the PAS procedure and is suggested to be a result of an increase in the rate of the oxidation of the sialo- and sialosulphoglycoproteins and a decrease in the rates of oxidation of neutral sugars.

The pollen-stigma interaction: bud pollination in the Cruciferae

TL;DR: The stigmas of buds of the age range capable of accepting self-pollen (bud pollination) in self incompatible individuals of Raphanus sativus and Cheiranthus cheiri were found to have cuticularised papillae already carrying a thin surface secretion over the receptive area, which reduced the germination rate of both compatible and incompatible pollen and prevented the tubes that were formed from penetrating the cuticle of the Papillae, so abolishing the self compatibility.

The histochemical demonstration of glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase activity.

TL;DR: The evidence gathered by previous workers concerning the feasibility of demonstrating specific dehydrogenases with Nitro BT, and the correspondence of the distribution of glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase determined histochemically with available quantitative data, suggest that at the cellular level the histochemical results accurately reflect the distributionof this enzyme.
