An extension of the plant ontology project supporting wood anatomy and development research

TL;DR: The Wood Ontology project as discussed by the authors provides a structured vocabulary and database resource that will be valuable for all scientists, including the IAWA community to maximizethe utility of the resource and analyses it empowers, it is important for researchers to adopt the use of ontology terms in the collection and dissemination of their data
Journal ArticleDOI

Dendrochronology and climatic signals in the wood of Nectandra oppositifolia from a dense rain forest in southern Brazil

TL;DR: The species has good dendrochronological potential with an intercorrelation of 0.61 between sites, indicating the existence of a synchronous pattern in the development of the trees, and the climate response of the species could be seen by negative tree growth effects for previous hot and current rainy growth seasons.

Recognition of Wood Porosity Based on Direction Insensitive Feature Sets

TL;DR: Two direction insensitive sets of features for poros- ity classification are designed and extracted and then used for construing decision trees for recognizing three different kinds of pore distribu- tions in wood microscopic images.
Journal ArticleDOI

Fueling the fire: examining caribbean colonial relations between humans and the environment

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors explored local and global influences for two sets of individuals: plantation owners and enslaved workers, and examined the interrelationships through the comparison of fuel sources from four distinct plantation activities.

Tree rings in tree species of a seasonal semi-deciduous forest in southern Brazil: wood anatomical markers, annual formation and radial growth dynamic

TL;DR: Evaluating the tree rings of eight tree species from different successional groups that show distinct degrees of deciduousness in a seasonal semi-deciduous forest located in a transition zone between subtropical and the tropical climates in southern Brazil found no consistent pattern of the growth trajectories was observed.

Vertical resin ducts in the secondary wood of the abietineae

TL;DR: Character of the tissue associated with the ducts and its interpretation and distribution at wounds andPhylogenetic interpretations and fossil evidence are presented.

Outdoor wood weathering and protection.

TL;DR: The natural weathering process causes exposed wood to discolour and degrade through the effect of light, moisture and staining micro-organisms as mentioned in this paper, but since light does not penetrate wood deeper than 200 mm, degradations reactions are a surface phenomenon.
