Support vector machines in wood identification: the case of three Salix species from Turkey
Kemal Turhan,Bedri Serdar +1 more
TL;DR: A support vector machine (SVM) was used for the first time as a predictive method for differentiating species of Salix wood through the biometric analysis of their anatomy using wood taken from basal disks of 3 species.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Palaeovegetation of Janruwa (Nigeria) and its Implications for the Decline of the Nok Culture
Alexa Höhn,Katharina Neumann +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors studied the charcoal assemblage of the post-Nok site Janruwa C, dating to the first centuries CE and found that the Nok people avoided forest environments while other, possibly new populations settled closer to the forest and were more familiar with its resources.

Especies nuevas de Baieroxylon Greguss y Circoporoxylon Kräusel en las formaciones Rayoso y Huincul (Cretácico), provincia del Neuquén, Argentina
TL;DR: The presence of these two new species increases the knowledge of the xyloflorisctic composition in the area during the Cretaceous and the environmental conditions could be inferred through the analysis of secondary xylem features in which that species grew.

Gymnospermous woods (Coniferales, Taxales, and Ginkgoales) from the Upper Permian Tacuary Formation, Eastern Paraguay
TL;DR: In this paper, six gymnosperm wood species from the Upper Permian Tacuary Formation from Eastern Paraguay are described, and an analysis of the anatomical characters shows evolutionary intermediate stages between the more primitive (araucarioid) Paleozoic and the more advanced (mixed to abietoid) Mesozoic wood taxa.

Anatomical variation of five plant species along an elevation gradient in Mexico City basin within the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, Mexico
P. Mayte S. Jiménez-Noriega,Teresa Terrazas,Lauro López-Mata,Arturo Sánchez-González,Heike Vibrans +4 more
TL;DR: In this paper, five species with three life forms, cryptophyte (Alchemilla procumbens, Geranium seemannii), hemicryptophyte, Acaena elongata, Lupinus montanus, and phanerophyte(Symphoricarpos microphyllus), distributed along an altitudinal gradient in the Sierra Nevada of central Mexico, were studied.

Vertical resin ducts in the secondary wood of the abietineae
TL;DR: Character of the tissue associated with the ducts and its interpretation and distribution at wounds andPhylogenetic interpretations and fossil evidence are presented.
Outdoor wood weathering and protection.
TL;DR: The natural weathering process causes exposed wood to discolour and degrade through the effect of light, moisture and staining micro-organisms as mentioned in this paper, but since light does not penetrate wood deeper than 200 mm, degradations reactions are a surface phenomenon.
