Book ChapterDOI

Circular dichroism probes of hemoglobin structure

TL;DR: In this paper, a review of the results of the CD studies of abnormal hemoglobins is presented, and the potential for further work indicated, as well as a theoretical analysis of the relationship between quaternary structure and the Soret band.
Journal ArticleDOI

The influence of quaternary structure on the EPR spectra of ferric haemoglobin

TL;DR: In the present study, an attempt was made to observe the influence of quaternary structure on the EPR spectra of valency hybrid haemoglobins at liquid helium temperature where small changes in the E PR spectra can be detected.
Journal ArticleDOI

Oscillatory oxido-reductive reaction of intracellular hemoglobin in human erythrocyte incubated with o-aminophenol.

TL;DR: The mechanism of oxido-reductive reaction of ferrous and ferric hemoglobin with aromatic reductants was proposed and it was found that oxyhemoglobin was oxidized by these aromatic compounds, and the reduction of methemoglobin by these compounds proceeded under anaerobic conditions, suggesting that ferric heme of hemoglobin reacts directly with aromatic reduces.
Journal ArticleDOI

Methemoglobin imidazole: evidence against an IHP-induced change in quaternary structure

TL;DR: In this paper, the properties of metHbA(Im-) were investigated in the presence and absence of IHP, and no evidence for an organic phosphate-induced quaternary structural change was found.
Journal ArticleDOI

Tertiary conformational transition in sheep hemoglobins induced by reaction with 5,5´-dithiobis(2-nitrobenzoate) and by binding of inositol hexakisphosphate

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that an allosteric transition occurs on reaction with DTNB and on inositol-P(6) binding, and the conformation favored for both the forward and reverse reactions is the r conformation.

X-ray diffraction study of binding of 2,3-diphosphoglycerate to human deoxyhaemoglobin.

TL;DR: DPG has a two-fold effect on human deoxyhaemoglobin: it both stabilizes and slightly distorts the S form, and may therefore affect the solubility.
Journal ArticleDOI

Nature of Haem–Haem Interaction

TL;DR: Dr Perutz describes how spin changes that accompany reaction with ligands alter the oxygen affinity of the haems.
Journal ArticleDOI

The interaction of 2,3-diphosphoglycerate with various human hemoglobins

TL;DR: Results suggest that the N-terminal amino groups of the non-α-chains are involved in the binding of 2,3-DPG to hemoglobin.
