TLDR
The effect of alloxan appeared paradoxical in that it increased cyanide-resistant respiration without significantly increasing the cell content of the manganese-superoxide dismutase and with only a small effect on the level of catalase.

Superoxide Radical and Superoxide Dismutases

TL;DR: O2- oxidizes the [4Fe-4S] clusters of dehydratases, such as aconitase, causing-inactivation and release of Fe(II), which may then reduce H2O2 to OH- +OH..
Journal ArticleDOI

Effect of aluminium on lipid peroxidation, superoxide dismutase, catalase, and peroxidase activities in root tips of soybean (Glycine max)

TL;DR: In this article, the effect of AI on lipid peroxidation and activities of enzymes related to production of activated oxygen species was reported. But, the authors did not consider the root elongation and modification of membrane properties.
Journal ArticleDOI

Biological effects of the superoxide radical.

TL;DR: Can the superoxide radical exert deleterious effects independent of participating with H2O2 in the production of the hydroxyl radical?
Journal ArticleDOI

The molecular mechanisms and physiological consequences of oxidative stress: lessons from a model bacterium.

TL;DR: This Review summarized the current knowledge of oxidative stress in Escherichia coli, the model organism for which the understanding of damage and defence is most well developed, and proposed strategies to protect themselves with scavenging enzymes and repair systems.
Journal ArticleDOI

Oxidative stress responses in Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhimurium.

TL;DR: The products of Oxy-R- and SoxRS-regulated genes, such as catalases and superoxide dismutases, are involved in the prevention of oxidative damage, whereas others play a role in the repair of oxidativeDamage.

Protein Measurement with the Folin Phenol Reagent

TL;DR: Procedures are described for measuring protein in solution or after precipitation with acids or other agents, and for the determination of as little as 0.2 gamma of protein.
Journal ArticleDOI

Determination of serum proteins by means of the biuret reaction.

TL;DR: An investigation of the biochemical changes following experimental liver injury felt the need of a simple, rapid, and accurate method for determining the protein fractions in small amounts of serum and began with Kingsley’s biuret procedure.

Superoxide Dismutase AN ENZYMIC FUNCTION FOR ERYTHROCUPREIN (HEMOCUPREIN)

TL;DR: The demonstration that O2·- can reduce ferricytochrome c and tetranitromethane, and that superoxide dismutase, by competing for the superoxide radicals, can markedly inhibit these reactions, is demonstrated.
Journal ArticleDOI

Superoxide dismutase: Improved assays and an assay applicable to acrylamide gels☆

TL;DR: The staining procedure for localizing superoxide dismutase on polyacrylamide electrophoretograms has been applied to extracts obtained from a variety of sources and could thus be assayed either in crude extracts or in purified protein fractions.
Journal ArticleDOI

A spectrophotometric method for measuring the breakdown of hydrogen peroxide by catalase.

TL;DR: A quantitative, spectrophotometric technique for following the breakdown of hydrogen peroxide has been developed for routine studies of catalase kinetics and appears to give lower values forCatalase activity than do titration techniques.
