TLDR
The antagonistic action of zinc and cAMP on glycolysis together with the rapid and marked decrease in free zinc concentration induced by glucagon (cAMP) may indicate an as yet unknown role of zinc as an important mediator of regulation of carbohydrate metabolism.

Measurement of intracellular free zinc in living cortical neurons: routes of entry.

TL;DR: Under conditions favoring reverse operation of the Na+–Ca2+ exchanger, Zn2+ application induced a slow increase in neurons and outward whole-cell current sensitive to benzamil–amiloride, suggesting that a second route of Zn 2+ entry into neurons may be via transporter-mediated exchange with intracellular Na+.

Metallothionein Expression in Animals: A Physiological Perspective on Function

TL;DR: Evidence has been produced, which suggests that metallothionein could act in a number of biochemical processes, including gene expression, apoptosis, proliferation and differentiation, and the ability of metallothsionein to exchange other metals with zinc in these proteins may explain a role in metal toxicity.

Fluorescence analysis of the labile iron pool of mammalian cells.

TL;DR: The method provides a simple, noninvasive tool for on-line monitoring of cytosolic iron under normal and abnormal conditions of cell iron supply and for assessing the dynamics of intracellular iron in living cells.

Correlation of apoptosis with change in intracellular labile Zn(II) using zinquin [(2-methyl-8-p-toluenesulphonamido-6-quinolyloxy)acetic acid], a new specific fluorescent probe for Zn(II)

TL;DR: The results suggest that prevention of apoptosis is a function of labile Zn, and that a reduction below a threshold concentration in this Zn pool induces apoptosis.
