Introducing custom power

The concept of custom power is now becoming familiar as mentioned in this paper and it describes the value-added power that electric utilities and other service providers will offer their customers in the future The improved level of reliability of this power, in terms of reduced interruptions and less variation, will stem from an integrated solution to present problems, of which a prominent feature will be the application of power electronic controllers to utility distribution systems and/or at the supply end of many industrial and commercial customers and industrial parks.

Fault current interruption by the dynamic voltage restorer

TL;DR: In this article, an auxiliary control strategy for downstream fault current interruption in a radial distribution line by means of a dynamic voltage restorer (DVR) is introduced and evaluated, and the results of simulation studies performed in the PSCAD/EMTDC software environment indicate that the proposed control scheme can limit the fault current to less than the nominal load current and restore the point of common coupling voltage within 10 ms.

Distribution system voltage regulation under fault conditions using static series regulators

Abstract: Power quality and availability are becoming important issues for critical and sensitive loads. Many of the disturbances are caused by faults on the utility distribution system in one or more phases, resulting in voltage dips and sags. This paper presents a viable alternative to UPS solutions to three phase load support in the form of practical series compensator structures. The compensators consist of transformer coupled voltage source inverters fed from a single diode rectifier connected to the faulted AC supply. The balancing and regulating algorithms are developed and applied to partial and total single phase to three phase type of faults. The compensation capability of the proposed schemes are derived. Practical issues, such as design, converter rating and the relative merits of each topology are considered. The paper also provides experimental results for a 2 kVA prototype power conditioner.
