TLDR
This book treats the inverse problem of remote sounding comprehensively, and discusses a wide range of retrieval methods for extracting atmospheric parameters of interest from the quantities such as thermal emission that can be measured remotely.Abstract:
Remote sounding of the atmosphere has proved to be a fruitful method of obtaining global information about the atmospheres of the earth and planets. This book treats the inverse problem of remote sounding comprehensively, and discusses a wide range of retrieval methods for extracting atmospheric parameters of interest from the quantities such as thermal emission that can be measured remotely. Inverse theory is treated in depth from an estimation-theory point of view, but practical questions are also emphasized, for example designing observing systems to obtain the maximum quantity of information, efficient numerical implementation of algorithms for processing of large quantities of data, error analysis and approaches to the validation of the resulting retrievals, The book is targeted at both graduate students and working scientists.read more

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors reported the discovery of an anomalously large, persistent methane source (10−43 metric tons per hour, detected in over 50% of observations) at a gas compressor station in Central Asia, together with additional sources (4−32 metric ton per hour) nearby, and estimated that these sources released 142 ± 34 metric kilotons of methane to the atmosphere from February 2018 through January 2019, comparable to the 4-month total emission from the well-documented Aliso Canyon blowout.

TL;DR: In this paper, the vertical profiles of aerosol extinction coefficient, nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and formaldehyde (HCHO) concentrations were retrieved from ground-based multi-axis differential optical absorption spectroscopy (MAX-DOAS) and lidar measurements were performed in Shanghai, China, during May 2016 to investigate the vertical distribution of summertime atmospheric pollutants.

A parametric scheme for the retrieval of two-dimensional ocean wave spectra from synthetic aperture radar look cross spectra
TL;DR: The Partition Rescaling and Shift Algorithm (PARSA) as mentioned in this paper is based on a maximum a posteriori approach in which an optimal estimate of a 2D wave spectrum is calculated given a measured SAR look cross spectrum (SLCS) and additional prior knowledge.

TL;DR: The Tropospheric Emission Spectrometer (TES) on the EOS Aura satellite makes global measurements of infrared radiances which are used to derive profiles of species such as O3, CO, H2O, HDO and CH4 as routine standard products as mentioned in this paper.
