TLDR
In this article, the authors used the nonlinear Reynolds equation to predict if bearing surfaces will make contact due to large impulsive external forces, and they demonstrated that the model based on the Reynolds equation accurately predicts the experimental large amplitude dynamic behavior of an axial-symmetric air thrust bearing.

Performance of inherently compensated flat pad aerostatic bearings subject to dynamic perturbation forces

TL;DR: In this paper, the static and dynamic characteristics of an inherently compensated orifice based flat pad air bearing system are analyzed based on Reynolds equation and mass conservation equation for incompressible flow, while the dynamic state characteristics are performed in a similar manner but using the above equations for compressible flow.
