In this paper, the authors presented a concise analytic expression for the loss of all weakly attenuating rays on circular optical fibres, and provided a unifying theory of light transmission within fibres.
Abstract
Many of the rays on circular optical fibres that are predicted from geometric optics to be trapped by total internal reflection are, in fact, leaky Thus geometric optics fails for long fibres The letter presents a concise analytic expression for the loss of all weakly attenuating rays The method is simple, and applicable to a large class of problems The results provide a unifying theory of light transmission within fibres, representing a generalisation of Fresnel's and Snell's laws

Propagation Effects in Optical Fibers

TL;DR: In this article, the authors unify the results in a simplified picture of the round dielectric waveguide and bring specific phenomena relevant to optical fiber design and fabrication into focus, such as cross sectional loss variations, various core index profiles and the tolerances required in their preparation, the necessary cladding thickness, directional changes, and sources of mode coupling affecting signal distortion and loss.

Failure of geometric optics for analysis of circular optical fibers

TL;DR: In this article, a simple attenuation coefficient is given, from which the loss of all rays is computed, which makes it possible to extend the use of ray tracing and Snell's laws for analyzing circular optical fibers.

Geometrical properties of random particles and the extraction of photons from electroluminescent diodes

TL;DR: In this paper, a theoretical and experimental analysis of the coupling of photons from their source within an indirect band-gap electroluminescent diode (or within a sufficiently transparent heterostructure direct-band-gap diode) into the ambient or into a multimode optical fiber is presented.

Leaky rays on optical fibres of arbitrary (circularly symmetric) index profiles

TL;DR: In this paper, the local plane-wave decomposition approach used to analyse optical fibres of arbitrary refractive-index profiles has been extended to include the case of so-called ''leaky´ rays.

Gradient Optics of subwavelength nanofilms

TL;DR: In this article, the effects of giant heterogeneity-induced non-local dispersion, both normal and anomalous, are examined by means of exact analytical solutions of Maxwell equations for gradient media.
