Fe and Mg indices from two homogenous collections of nuclear elliptical galaxy spectra are compared with model indices. In the average giant elliptical, the [Mg/Fe] ratio exceeds that of the most metal-rich stars in the solar neighborhood by ∼0.2-0.3 dex, with a large spread about this mean. This result implies a variable «enrichment effectiveness» of Type II supernovae (SNs) compared with Type Ia SNs in the evolution of ellipticals, caused perhaps by differences in star formation time scales, the initial mass function, or the amount of Fe versus Mg ejected in galactic windsread more

Hγ and Hδ Absorption Features in Stars and Stellar Populations
TL;DR: In this paper, the Hγ and Hδ absorption features are measured in a sample of 455 Lick/IDS stars with pseudo-equivalent width indices and two definitions, involving a narrow (~20 A) and a wide (~40 A) central bandpass, are measured.

TL;DR: In this article, it was shown that metal-poor GCs formed in low-mass dark matter halos in the early universe and that their properties reflect biased galaxy assembly, while metal-rich GCs were born in the subsequent dissipational buildup of their parent galaxies.

Stellar population models of Lick indices with variable element abundance ratios
TL;DR: In this article, the Lick indices from CN1 to TiO2 in the wavelength range 4000≲λ≲6500 A of simple stellar population models with, for the first time, variable element abundance ratios, [α/Fe ] = 0.0.

Charlie Conroy,James E. Gunn +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a comprehensive calibration of the FSPS model against a suite of data was performed, including ultraviolet, optical, and near-IR photometry, surface brightness fluctuations, and integrated spectra of star clusters in the Magellanic Clouds (MCs), M87, M31, and the Milky Way (MW).

The Stellar Population Histories of Early-Type Galaxies. II. Controlling Parameters of the Stellar Populations
TL;DR: In this paper, single stellar population (SSP)-equivalent parameters for 50 local elliptical galaxies were analyzed as a function of their structural parameters, including velocity dispersions, radii, surface brightnesses, masses, and luminosities.
