Fe and Mg indices from two homogenous collections of nuclear elliptical galaxy spectra are compared with model indices. In the average giant elliptical, the [Mg/Fe] ratio exceeds that of the most metal-rich stars in the solar neighborhood by ∼0.2-0.3 dex, with a large spread about this mean. This result implies a variable «enrichment effectiveness» of Type II supernovae (SNs) compared with Type Ia SNs in the evolution of ellipticals, caused perhaps by differences in star formation time scales, the initial mass function, or the amount of Fe versus Mg ejected in galactic windsread more

Chemical Evolution of Galaxies
TL;DR: In this paper, a new perspective brought about by the Hubble Deep Field and follow-up investigations of global star formation rates, diffuse background, and so on, it has become necessary to consider the chemical composition of dark baryonic matter as well as that of visible matter in galaxies.

Abundance gradients in elliptical galaxies
L. Angeletti,P. Giannone +1 more
TL;DR: The link between metallicity and stellar binding energies and angular momenta is derived from the "concentration model" by Lynden-Bell (1975) with the addition of a terminal wind and an age spread among the stellar populations of individual ellipticals.

Peculiarities and populations in elliptical galaxies. III. Dating the last star formation event
TL;DR: In this article, a two-component model of the populations of elliptical galaxies is presented, involving a primary and ajuvenile population, involving 6 colours and 4 Lick line-indices.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present line strength measurements for 74 early-type galaxies in the core of the Coma cluster reaching down to velocity dispersions, sigma, of 30 km/s.
