TLDR
This work quantified, using adhesion and spreading characteristics of BHK cells, the differential adhesiveness that can be created on patterned surfaces, how this alters with the duration of exposure to serum proteins, and how this relates to the persistence of cell patterning despite increases in cell density.

Cells on chips

TL;DR: Highly integrated microdevices show great promise for basic biomedical and pharmaceutical research, and robust and portable point-of-care devices could be used in clinical settings, in both the developed and the developing world.
Journal ArticleDOI

Patterning proteins and cells using soft lithography

TL;DR: This review describes the pattering of proteins and cells using a non-photolithographic microfabrication technology, which consists of a set of related techniques, each of which uses stamps or channels fabricated in an elastomeric ('soft') material for pattern transfer.
Journal ArticleDOI

Topographical control of cells

TL;DR: A review of the literature on the reaction of cells to their surrounding topography and a summary of the types of prosthesis where advantage has been taken of the ability to fabricate topography.
Journal ArticleDOI

Using self-assembled monolayers to understand the interactions of man-made surfaces with proteins and cells.

TL;DR: The convenience and broad application offered by SAMs and microcontact printing make this combination of techniques useful for studying a variety of fundamental phenomena in biointerfacial science.

Formation of microstamped patterns on surfaces and derivative articles

TL;DR: In this article, a method of patterning a material surface is provided in which an elastomeric stamp having a stamping surface is coated with a self-assembled monolayer forming species having a functional group selected to bind to a particular material.

Topographical control of cell behaviour: II. Multiple grooved substrata.

TL;DR: Electronics miniaturization techniques have been used to fabricate substrata to study contact guidance of cells and found that repeat spacing had a small effect but that groove depth proved to be much more important in determining cell alignment, which increased with depth.

Cell-to-substratum adhesion and guidance of axonal elongation

TL;DR: The conclusion is offered that interactions between microspikes and the substratum adjacent to the growth cone are important determinants of the directions and pathways of axonal elongation.

Controlled outgrowth of dissociated neurons on patterned substrates

TL;DR: A set of procedures for patterning the outgrowth of cells cultured on 2-dimensional substrates showed that glia are patterned along with the associated granule cells, and Interestingly, the GFAP-positive glia that proliferated on surfaces bound with amine derivatives attained primarily a tile-shaped, fibroblast-like morphology, while those proliferating on glass coated with poly(D-lysine) developed primarily a spindle- shaped, process-bearing morphology.
